First-year vaulter Holly Schreiber set a school record in the pole vault as the Case Western Reserve University men's and women's track and field teams competed at the Marv Frye Invitational hosted by Ohio Wesleyan University in Delaware, Ohio, on Saturday.
Schreiber cleared 3.61 meters in the event, besting the previous record of 3.57 meters set by Abbey Waltz in 2019. Schreiber, who also owns the program indoor pole vault record of 3.70 meters, currently ranks 15th in Division III. Graduate Victoria Zhao, who cleared 3.05 meters and placed fourth, and first-year Kendall Glaser, who cleared 2.90 meters and placed fifth, also earned top five finishes in the event.
The Spartan women's team placed second out of 10 collegiate teams with 152 points, while the CWRU men's team placed fourth out of 10 teams with 98 points.
Sophomore distance runner Ayla Grabenbauer earned three top four finishes for CWRU, including a win in the 4x400-meter relay with sophomore Melanie Taylor, junior Marquis Globokar, and senior Jessica Kwasny in 4:09.04. Grabenbauer was the runner-up in the mile run in 5:13.20 and placed fourth in the 400-meter hurdles in 1:12.70. Globokar added a fourth-place finish in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:22.20, and Kwasny won the 400-meter hurdles in 1:09.29.
Also placing first for the Spartans in distance events were senior Grace Jackson, who won the mile run in 5:09.21, and sophomore Arianna Holbrook, who crossed the line first in the 800-meter run at 2:20.37.
In the field, three CWRU student-athletes placed in the top five in the hammer throw, led by junior Lauren Roskuszka, who won the event with a heave of 47.74 meters. Junior Rachel Ginn earned the bronze with a mark of 45.76 meters, and senior Ailean Duffie recorded the fifth-best throw of 43.79 meters.
Junior Sarah Ozeki was the runner-up in the triple jump after bounding 10.71 meters and finished fifth in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 16.18 seconds. Placing third in the triple jump was senior Emily Hopkins (10.70 meters), and sophomore Grace Misiunas finished second in the 100-meter hurdles in 15.64 seconds.
Rounding out the top five finishes for Case Western Reserve were sophomore Anna Avila, who placed third in the 5,000-meter run in 19:25.15, and sophomore Madison Martinez, placing fifth in the javelin throw with a heave of 31.13 meters.
Members of the CWRU men's track and field team placed first in three events on Saturday. Sophomore Anthony DeCarlo won the pole vault by clearing 4.55 meters, the fifth-best mark in program history. Senior Yusuf Shaaban won the 400-meter hurdles in 55.48 seconds, and the 4x400-meter relay of junior Nicolas Lende, sophomore Aaron Brula, first-year Nico Matt, and sophomore Josh Bates crossed the line first in 3:21.89, the 22nd-fastest time in Division III this season.
In the field, first-year Tanush Anand placed second (13.09 meters) and sophomore Connor Evans finished fourth (12.41 meters) in the triple jump. Sophomore Troy Olson earned the bronze in the long jump with a leap of 6.50 meters, and Anand added a third-place high jump finish after clearing 1.90 meters.
Three sprinters finished in the top four for CWRU, led by sophomore Joshua Park who was the runner-up in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 15.48 seconds. Graduate student Juan Perez recorded the second-fastest time in program history in the 100-meter dash of 10.75 seconds to place fourth, and senior Brett Callow placed fourth in the 200-meter dash in 22.05 seconds.
Finally, first-year Finn Bonner was the runner-up in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 10:50.76.
The Spartan track and field teams will head to two meets next weekend. Select distance runners will travel to Bucknell College for the Bison Outdoor Classic, while most of the team will compete in the All-Ohio Outdoor Championships on April 12 and 13 in Delaware, Ohio.
