The 11th-ranked Case Western Reserve University women's tennis team took down Division II Walsh University 8-1 at the Mayfield Village Racquet Club in Mayfield, Ohio, on Friday afternoon to begin the team's Senior Weekend.
The Spartans improved to 11-3 on the season with their fifth consecutive win. The Cavaliers fell to 7-11 overall.
CWRU started the match with a sweep in doubles play, leading 3-0 heading into the singles contests. Juniors Hannah Kassaie and Lily McCloskey did not drop a point at first doubles, defeating Yasmina Mayer and Carla Padberg 8-0. At second doubles, junior Radha Patel and sophomore Katalina Wang won 8-2 over Aleksandra Chmir and Olesya Ivashchuk. To complete the sweep, senior Pallavi Goculdas and junior Anna Kan bested Rachl Kibler and Isabella Sanchez 8-5 at third doubles.
Patel earned a win at fifth singles by retirement after leading 5-2 in the first set. McCloskey clinched the match victory with a 6-2, 6-2, win over Padberg at second singles. Kan followed with a 6-3, 6-4, decision over Ivashchuk, and Wang added a 6-3, 6-3, win at third singles over Chmir to make the score 7-0.
Kassaie won a hard-fought first singles match, prevailing 7-6 (7-4), 6-2, over Mayer. Walsh earned its only point at sixth singles, winning 6-4, 6-3.
The Spartans will wrap up Senior Weekend with a matchup against the University of Rochester tomorrow with the first serve scheduled for 5 p.m. at the MVRC.
