The fourth-ranked Case Western Reserve University men's tennis team wrapped up its 2024 regular season with a 6-3 win over 25th-ranked Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on Saturday afternoon.
The Spartans improved to 23-4 for the season with the win, ending their regular season on a 10-match winning streak. CWRU also raised its record to 11-2 against nationally ranked Division III opponents. Carnegie Mellon dropped to 6-9 with the loss.
CWRU senior Vishwa Aduru and graduate student Diego Maza helped the Spartans take the early lead with an 8-1 win at first doubles against Raghav Jangbahadur and Daniel Kong. The remaining two doubles matches were each close. The Tartans' third doubles duo of Nicholas Wernink and Nadim Motaghedi bested seniors Daniel French and Yuvraj Narang 8-6 to even the team score at 1-1. However, at second doubles, senior Sahil Dayal and sophomore Anmay Devaraj were able to come from behind against Akshay Joshi and Derek Wong, winning in a tiebreaker 8-7 (1) to put CWRU ahead 2-1 heading into singles play.
Carnegie Mellon notched the first victory in singles play with Jangbahadur winning 6-3, 6-3 at no. 1 singles against junior Ajay Mahenthiran. However, the Spartans went on to win the next three singles matches to clinch the victory. Aduru put CWRU back in front 3-2 with a 7-5, 6-1 win against Kong at second singles and junior Casey Hishinuma claimed a 1-6, 6-2, 6-2 victory over Jonathan Gu at fifth singles to put the Spartans a point away from the team win. Graduate student Michael Sutanto provided the clinching victory with a 7-6 (5), 6-2 win over Motaghedi at third singles.
After the match was decided, Maza secured a 6-2, 7-6 (8) win against Joshi at sixth singles and junior Ansh Shah suffered a three-set setback to Wernink at fourth singles, 6-3, 6-7 (4), 10-6.
The Spartans will now turn their attention toward the postseason, beginning with the University Athletic Association Championship Tournament starting on Thursday morning at 8:30 a.m. Seeding for the tournament will be announced early next week.
