The Case Western Reserve University wrestling team earned its best finish in 11 years at the NCAA Division III Central Region Championship, placing ninth out of 19 teams following competition on the second day of the meet held at the ONU Sports Center on the campus of Ohio Northern University in Ada, Ohio.
Overall, Case Western Reserve placed ninth with 61.0 points. Baldwin Wallace won the region with 193.0 points. The ninth-place finish is the best for the Spartans in the current format, which dates to the 2012-13 season. Last season, the team placed 11th, its best finish to that point.
Sophomore Art Martinez wrestled for a spot in the national championship meet in the semifinal round of the 141-pound bracket to start the day. However, he lost by fall to drop into the consolation bracket. He responded with a 4-1 sudden victory in the consolation semifinal, defeating Austin Matheney of Albion with a takedown in the first overtime period. He advanced to the third-place match, which would grant the winner a berth to the national tournament. Martinez battled Olivet's Dylan Phelps for seven minutes, scoring 11 points in the final period to get within four. However, Phelps prevailed by decision, 16-12, with Martinez placing fourth in the bracket. He ended his sophomore season with a record of 32-10, 10 pins, and a team-high 11 technical falls. His 32 wins were also the most by a Spartan this season and give him 66 for his career in just two seasons. It was his second career placement at the regional meet after he finished fifth last season.
Sophomores E.J. Alizio and Thomas Wagner each placed sixth in their weight classes.
Alizio, competing at 125 pounds, advanced to the consolation semifinal with a forfeit. After a 10-1 major decision loss, he dropped a 15-9 decision in the fifth-place match to take sixth. Alizio finished the regional with a record of 3-3, placing at the meet for the first time in his career. He ended the 2023-24 campaign with a record of 24-18, eight pins, and two technical falls.
Wagner also placed at the regional championship for the first time in his career, competing in the 157-pound bracket in 2024. He started the day with a 10-2 major decision over Justin Gorman of Albion. Following an 8-2 loss by decision in the consolation semifinal, he dropped a hard-fought 13-9 decision in the fifth-place match to end the regional with a record of 3-3. Wagner concluded the season with an overall record of 16-13, winning three matches by fall and four by technical fall.
Sophomore Jacob Gregg placed eighth in the 133-pound bracket, finishing the season with a record of 20-18, four pins, and one technical fall.
With no Spartans advancing to the national championship meet, the regional championship will conclude the 2023-24 season for the CWRU wrestling team.Â
