Four members of the Case Western Reserve University wrestling team advanced to the second day of the NCAA Division III Wrestling Central Regional Championship after action on Friday at the ONU Sports Center in Ada, Ohio.
Sophomore Art Martinez will wrestle in the semifinal of the 141-pound bracket, and sophomores E.J. Alizio (125 pounds), Jacob Gregg (133 pounds), and Thomas Wagner (157 pounds) will each wrestle in the third consolation round on Saturday.
Martinez will look to punch his ticket to the national championship with a win on the second day after securing victories in his first two matches on Friday. He started the competition with a win by fall over Trace Williams of Otterbein in 4:35. It was his 10th pin of the season. Martinez reached the semifinal with a 14-4 major decision over Jett Boots of Trine, his 31st win of the campaign. Martinez, who is guaranteed to finish in at least sixth place, will face Wabash's Evan Burge in the semifinal.
Alizio started his day with a tight 7-6 decision before dropping to the consolation bracket with a loss by fall in the quarterfinal. He responded with a 9-0 major decision over Jushawn Ferrell of Alma to reach the second day. Alizio improved to 23-16 on the season and will face Otterbein's Noah Houchins in the consolation quarterfinal.
Gregg began the afternoon with a thrilling 8-5 sudden victory to reach the quarterfinal. After losing by major decision, he won his third bout by medical forfeit. Gregg will face Tyler Davis of Adrian on Saturday and improved to 20-16 on the season with two wins.
Wagner also needed overtime to settle his first match, prevailing 6-3 in sudden victory to advance in the bracket. Following a loss by decision, he pinned Nick Nettleton of Mount Union in 3:46 to reach the second day of competition. It was his third pin of the season as Wagner improved to 15-11 in 2023-24. He will face Albion's Justin Gorman in the consolation quarterfinal.
For Alizio, Gregg, and Wagner, a win on Saturday would advance them to the consolation semifinal, while a loss would drop them to the seventh-place match. Â
