The Case Western Reserve University men's and women's swimming and diving teams have earned the College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) Scholar All-America Team honor for the fall 2023 semester, the organization announced on Monday. Both teams ranked in the top 15 in Division III in grade point average among schools with at least 10 participants with the women's team earning the fourth-best GPA in the country and the men's team placing 13th in Division III.
The women's team earned a grade point average of 3.73Â in the fall which ranked fourth out of 128 ranked Division III teams with at least 10 members. The Spartans trailed only Caltech, WashU, and Colorado College. While excelling in the classroom, the team has also consistently performed well in the pool by currently ranking 13th in the CSCAA national coaches' poll. CWRU finished the dual portion of its schedule with a record of 5-1, losing only to second-ranked Kenyon, and have six individuals with event times among the 30 fastest in Division III.
The men's team ranked 13th among 158 ranked Division III teams and second in the University Athletic Association with a grade point average of 3.77. In the pool, the men's team ranks 15th in the country, according to the CSCAA, and boasts 10 event times among the 30 fastest in Division III.
The awards are in recognition of teams that achieved a grade point average of 3.0 or higher during the Fall 2023 semester.
The CWRU swimming and diving coaching staff includes Head Coach Doug Milliken, who has led both teams for 14 seasons, Assistant Coach Elizabeth Levy, Diving Coach Morgan Gougler, and Volunteer Assistant Coach Elle Holland. The Spartans have earned CSCAA Scholar All-America Team honors in every one of Milliken's 14 years.
In total, 783 teams from 461 colleges and universities across all three NCAA divisions, the NAIA, and NJCAA earned Scholar All-America Team honors. Because both teams earned a GPA higher than 3.30, they will now become eligible for the Intercollegiate Coach Association Coalition All-Sport Academic Standings.
The UAA was one of nine conferences across the country and one of four in Division III to have all its men's and women's teams to be named CSCAA Scholar All-America Team honors.
The Spartans continue their season on Wednesday, February 14, the first day of the 2024 UAA Swimming and Diving Championships hosted by the University of Chicago at the Ratner Athletic Center in Chicago. The four-day meet will conclude on Saturday, February 17.
