The Case Western Reserve University men's and women's track and field teams competed in their final meet before conference championships on Friday, hosting the Ed Finnigan Greater Cleveland Colleges Invite at the Veale Center in Cleveland.
Members of the women's team won two events and earned 14 top-three finishes at the home meet.
Senior Anna Zinsser won the 200-meter dash with a time of 27.13 seconds and helped the 4x400-meter relay place first in 4:24.35. Joining Zinsser in the relay were sophomore Melanie Taylor, junior Marquis Globokar, and senior Jessica Kwasny. Globokar added a runner-up finish as an individual, crossing the line second in the 800-meter run at 2:23.39.
Junior Sarah Ozeki earned a pair of top-three finishes, placing second in the triple jump with a leap of 11.13 meters, 10 millimeters shy of first place, and third in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 9.54 seconds. In the sprint, sophomore Grace Misiunas placed second in 9.51 seconds after completing the race in 9.33 seconds in the prelims. In the field, senior Emily Hopkins finished behind Ozeki in the triple jump by bounding 10.82 meters.
Placing second in both throwing events was senior Adrienne Wachtman, who was the runner-up in the weight throw with a toss of 14.82 meters and in the shot put with a heave of 12.08 meters. Sophomore Michelle Lee earned bronze in the weight throw with a mark of 14.71 meters.
CWRU also placed two student-athletes on the pole vault podium, with first-year Annie Wank placing second by clearing 3.35 meters and graduate student Victoria Zhao finishing third after clearing 3.20 meters.
In the mile run, sophomore Julia Hluck finished second with a time of 5:22.56, and, in the long jump, first-year Chelsea Kodiaga placed third by leaping 4.89 meters.
The Spartan men's team totaled four event victories and 15 podium finishes.
Sophomore Josh Bates won two events, placing first in the 500-meter run in 1:07.51 and helping the Spartans win the 4x400-meter relay in 3:25.42. Bates was joined by senior Brett Callow, graduate student Pierce Boucher, and senior Yusuf Shaaban for the relay. Shaaban nearly beat Bates in the 500-meter run, placing second in 1:07.83, just 0.32 seconds behind the sophomore. Callow and Boucher added third place finishes as individuals with Callow placing third in the 200-meter dash in 22.88 seconds and Boucher finishing third in the 400-meter dash in 53.07 seconds.
Members of the CWRU men's team won two distance events: the 800-meter run and 5,000-meter run. First-year Seth Tivakaran was the first to cross the line in the shorter race, finishing in 1:58.49. In the long race, sophomore Solomon Greene placed first with a time of 16:11.88 with senior Arjun Thillairajah placing third in 17:07.12.
In the field, junior Andrew Qi reached the podium in two events, placing second in the triple jump and third in the long jump. He bounded 13.19 meters in the triple jump and leapt 6.33 meters in the long jump. Both sophomore Anthony DeCarlo and junior Quaylen Lamarre cleared 4.20 meters in the high jump with DeCarlo placing second in the event and Lamarre placing third.
Placing ahead of Boucher in the 400-meter dash was first-year Nico Matt who was the runner-up with a time of 52.86 seconds. Two Spartans placed in the top three in the 60-meter hurdles. Sophomore Joshua Park finished second in 8.79 seconds, and graduate student Peculiar Nzegbuna placed third in 8.84 seconds.
The Spartans will head to New York next week for the 2024 UAA Championships, hosted by New York University at the Armory in Manhattan. Action at the two-day meet is scheduled to begin on Saturday, February 24 at 9 a.m.Â
