Track and Field Teams Compete at All-Ohio Indoor Championships, Two More Meets

The Case Western Reserve University men's and women's track and field teams competed at three meets over the weekend, including the Indoor All-Ohio Championships on Saturday at the Clements Recreation and Fitness Center in Westerville, Ohio, on the campus of Otterbein University. On Friday, members of the teams participated in the GVSU Big Meet hosted by Grand Valley State University at the Kelly Family Sports Center in Allendale, Michigan, and the Crimson & Gold Invitational hosted by Oberlin College at the Heisman Field House in Oberlin, Ohio.

At the All-Ohio Championships, the Spartan women's team earned the second-most points of any school, compiling 101.5 points and besting 10 other teams. The CWRU men's team placed fifth out of 13 schools with 59.5 points. Mount Union placed first in the team standings, with the school's men's team earning 118 points and its women's team earning 120 points.

Case Western Reserve won a pair of events at the meet. CWRU runners placed first and second in the mile run, with sophomore Arianna Holbrook winning the event in 5:11.76 and sophomore Lauren Iagnemma placing second in 5:12.43. Holbrook also added a third-place finish in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:23.34. In the triple jump, senior Emily Hopkins earned first place by bounding 11.15 meters, and junior Sarah Ozeki placed third with a mark of 10.79 meters.

Earning silver in the weight throw was senior Adrienne Wachtman, who placed second with a heave of 15.66 meters. Sophomore Ashley Novak was the runner-up in the 3,000-meter run, crossing the line at 10:26.67. In the pole vault, first-year Holly Schreiber placed third by clearing 3.56 meters, the third-best mark in program history.

For the men's team, both the 4x200-meter and 4x400-meter relays placed second at the meet. In the shorter relay, graduate student Keith Cartwright, first-years Aidan Rogers and Matthew Bezuneh, and senior Brett Callow completed the race in 1:31.19. In the longer race, graduate student Pierce Boucher, junior Nicolas Lende, senior Yusuf Shaaban, and first-year Jeremiah Broughton placed second with a time of 3:29.43. Cartwright added an individual top-three finish, placing third in the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.77 seconds.

First-year Jacob Slater earned All-Ohio honors with a runner-up finish in the mile run, crossing the line at 4:25.97.

At Oberlin, the Spartans won eight events, including both pole vault contests with sophomore Anthony DeCarlo clearing 4.25 meters and graduate student Victoria Zhao clearing 3.20 meters. Also in the field, sophomore Aaron Brula cleared 1.64 meters to win the high jump, first-year Chelsea Kodiaga won the long jump with a leap of 4.69 meters, sophomore Layla Seaton took the triple jump by bounding 9.61 meters, and sophomore Michelle Lee won the weight throw with a toss of 15.44 meters. On the track, junior Jack Xia was the first to cross the line in the 60-meter dash at 7.53 seconds, and first-year Nico Matt won the 400-meter dash in 52.32 seconds.

At Grand Valley State, five distance runners turned in top times for CWRU. In the mile run, both junior Nate Gilbert and senior Grace Jackson finished with the second-fastest times in program history. Gilbert crossed the line at 4:12.64, placing seventh overall and second among Division III runners. Jackson completed the race in 5:05.71, finishing 29th overall and fifth among Division III student-athletes.

Sophomore Josh Bates recorded the second-fastest unadjusted time in program history in the 800-meter run, finishing in 1:55.28. In the 5,000-meter run, junior Aidan Nathan clocked a time of 14:41.03, the fourth best in program history, and in the 3,000-meter run, senior Stephen Henry recorded a time of 8:34.82 to rank fifth in program history.

Next weekend, the Spartans will host the Ed Finnigan Greater Cleveland Colleges Invite on Friday at the Veale Center. Action is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. The team will also travel to the SPIRE Tune-Up in Geneva, Ohio, on Saturday, for the last meet before the conference indoor championships.
