Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

CWRU Women’s Basketball Falls to Denison, 69-60

Case Western Reserve University senior forward Evie Miller led all Spartan players with 12 points and 12 rebounds and matched her own school record with seven blocks, but it was not enough for the Spartans who suffered a 69-60 setback against Denison University at Horsburgh Gymnasium in Cleveland on Saturday.

CWRU fell to 3-4 overall with the loss while Denison improved to 6-3 following the victory.

Miller made four of her nine shot attempts from the floor in the game and all four of her free throw attempts. She was one of four Spartans to finish in double figures on Saturday, as was joined by sophomore forward Maura Schorr, who finished with 11 points, and junior guard Maya Roberts and senior guard Nyah Moore, who each scored 10 in the game. Sophomore guard Mya Hartjes added seven points, five rebounds, and a team-high four assists.

After Denison scored the first basket of the game, the Spartans responded with a 10-0 run, capped off by a three-pointer by Moore to put CWRU ahead by eight points with 7:14 left in the period. The Spartans would not trail again in the period, but the Big Red evened the score at 19-19 with 1:30 left in the first, and the game remained tied 23-23 at the end of the first period. The game stayed within a possession for most of the second quarter, but the Spartans never trailed until the 1:46 mark when a Denison basket put the Big Red in front by a point, 29-28, and CWRU headed into the break down three, 31-28.

Moore and Roberts ended the first half with a team-high eight points apiece.

Denison expanded its lead to seven points, 35-28, with 8:46 left in the third, but the Spartans trimmed it back to a point, 37-36, after a pair of made free throws by Miller with 6:33 on the clock. CWRU stayed close, trailing 40-38 with 5:35 left in the third before an 8-2 stretch by Denison expanded its lead back to eight points, and the Big Red took a 51-47 edge into the final period. The Spartans pulled back within a point in the fourth quarter after a three by Hartjes with 5:41 to play made it 55-54, and were within two points, 62-60, with just under two minutes on the clock following a layup by Miller. However, Denison scored the final seven points of the contest to pull away late for the nine-point win.

The Spartans will be off for the next 12 days before returning to action on Thursday, December 19 at 1:00 p.m. when the team will play host to the University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg.

Spartan Notes

  • This was the fourth time over her career that Miller has recorded a school-record seven blocks in a game. The last time she notched seven blocks in a contest was November 20, 2022, against Wooster as a sophomore. She now has 27 blocks through seven games this season, and 94 for her career, the sixth-most in program history.

  • Miller's 12 rebounds also matched her career high, marking the third time this season she has reached the mark. This was her second double-double of the campaign and her fifth double-figure rebound effort.

  • The Spartans finished the game shooting 38.7% overall (24-62) overall and 21.7% (5-23) from long range, while Denison shot 39.4% overall (26-66) and 26.1% (6-23) from behind the three-point line.

  • CWRU fell to 24-24 all-time against Denison. The Spartans have won five of the last nine meetings against the Big Red, but this was the team's second-straight loss to Denison after falling 52-51 on a last second-shot last year.
