The Case Western Reserve University women's basketball team broke the school record for points in a game with a 108-52 win against the University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg on Thursday afternoon at Horsburgh Gymnasium in Cleveland.
The Spartans brought their record back to .500 with the win, improving to 4-4 overall, while the Bobcats fell to 1-10 with the setback.
The 108-point output bested the previous school record of 105 points against Wilmington on November 30, 2002. It is the first time the Spartans have broken 100 points in a game since a 102-99 win in overtime against Eastern during the 2018-19 campaign and just the third time in program history CWRU has reached the century mark in a game.
The record-breaking point total resulted from a well-rounded effort by the Spartans with 12 players seeing time on the court, 11 total players scoring, and six players scoring in double figures. CWRU was led by junior guard/forward Emily Plachta who scored 20 points (one shy of her career-high) on seven-of-10 shooting overall and a career-best five three-point shots on seven attempts with five rebounds, three assists, a steal, and a block in 18 minutes on the floor. Sophomore guard Jordyn Call added 17 points on six-of-nine shooting overall, including five-of-seven from long range. First-year guard/forward Lauren Ludwig tallied the first double-double of her career with 14 points and 10 rebounds, both career-best marks, while sophomore guard Mya Hartjes, sophomore guard/forward Olivia Franciscus, and first-year guard Mila Rossini each scored 12 points.
Junior guard Emi Hutter-DeMarco led the team with eight assists and collected six rebounds, and senior guard Nyah Moore finished with four steals.
CWRU led nearly wire-to-wire in the game with Hartjes opening the scoring with a three-pointer 56 seconds into the game. The Bobcats evened the score at 3-3 before a 10-0 Spartan run put the team ahead by double-digits. Pitt.-Greensburg closed the gap to six points, 15-9, with 2:45 left in the first but a 12-2 run to end the period by the Spartans gave the team a 27-11 advantage heading into the second. CWRU held the Bobcats scoreless until the 5:14 mark in the second, starting the frame on a 16-0 run and extending their run from the first half to 28-2, to go up by 32 points, 43-11. CWRU led by as many as 34 points in the second before taking a 52-23 advantage into halftime.
The Spartans went on to outscore the Bobcats 32-16 in the third quarter and 23-13 in the fourth, taking a game-high 58-point lead with 17 seconds left in the game on a three-pointer by Ludwig before a late basket by Pitt.-Greensburg set the final score at 108-52.
CWRU finished the game shooting 50.0% (40-80) overall, the team's second-highest mark of the campaign, while its 41.3% mark from three-point range (19-46) was its best of the year. The Spartans finished with a season-high 14 steals and outscored the Bobcats 28-7 off turnovers and 23-0 on fast break attempts, while CWRU held a 64-6 edge in bench scoring.
The Spartans will be off until December 29-30 when the team returns to action at the Gratz Park Private Wealth Holiday Tournament in Lexington, Kentucky. CWRU will open play at the event against host Transylvania University at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, December 29.
