CWRU Tops Allegheny 60-52 in Women Leaders Tip Off Finale

The Case Western Reserve University women's basketball team picked up its first win of the season on Saturday afternoon, defeating host Allegheny College 60-52 in the final game of the Women Leaders Tip Off Tournament in Meadville, Pennsylvania.

CWRU now stands at 1-1 on the season while Allegheny dropped to 0-2.

Senior forward Evie Miller led all Spartan players with 12 points and 12 rebounds, both career highs and marking the first double-double of her career. Sophomore forward Maura Schorr also notched her first career double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds, also each a career-best mark. Junior guard/forward Emily Plachta finished the game with 10 points and four blocks and junior guard Maya Roberts added 10 points off the bench.

CWRU led for nearly the entirety of the first period and took a 15-11 lead into the second. The Spartans lead ballooned to as many as nine points after a free throw by Roberts made it 28-19 with 1:58 left in the half and CWRU carried a 30-24 advantage into the break.

A jumper by Miller made it 36-25 with 6:03 left in the third, the team's largest of the game, but the Gators answered with an 11-0 run to tie the score at 36-36 with 2:42 remaining in the period. CWRU responded with a three from Schorr and a layup by junior guard Emi Hutter-DeMarco to go back ahead by five and took a 43-40 lead into the final period. Allegheny scored the first four points of the third to take its first lead of the game, 44-43 with 8:14 to play. However, Roberts hit a layup on the Spartans' next possession and CWRU would never trail again, closing out the eight-point win.

The Spartans will be back in action this Friday, November 15 returning home to host crosstown rival John Carroll University at 6:00 p.m. inside Horsburgh Gymnasium in Cleveland.
