No. 13 Volleyball Sweeps Wooster on Senior Night

The 13th-ranked Case Western Reserve University volleyball team celebrated its nine graduating seniors with a sweep over the College of Wooster on Saturday night at Horsburgh Gym in Cleveland. The Spartans prevailed 25-17, 25-19, 25-13 over the Fighting Scots.

CWRU improved to 23-5 with the victory, while Wooster dropped to 12-18.

Senior Chloe Maciejewski led the Spartan attack with 10 kills on 26 attacks with senior Lily Crouch and senior Gwendolyn Hayes each adding six kills. Defensively, Crouch, senior Rea Marfatia, and first-year Sophia Datto all had a team-high eight digs with Crouch adding a pair of blocks. Senior Carly Scott recorded 13 assists, and first-year Avery Basinger added nine.

The Spartans started the match on a 7-1 run before the Scots tied the score of the first set at 10. CWRU responded with an 8-2 run, never conceding its advantage for the remainder of the first period.

Wooster held an 11-8 lead midway through the second set, looking to even the match score at one. Case Western Reserve tied the score at 13, 14, and 15, before four consecutive points gave the hosts a four-point lead. The visitors cut into their deficit, making the score 20-18 with a service ace, but a kill by Crouch ignited a set-ending 5-1 Spartan run.

With the score of the third set tied at six, the Spartans used a 7-0 run on the service of sophomore Sude Naz Item to claim a 13-6 lead they would not relinquish. The hosts led by as many as 11 points late in the set before a Wooster attacking error clinched the match for Case Western Reserve.

CWRU will next travel to Rochester, New York, for the University Athletic Association Championship. The second-seeded Spartans will face seventh-seeded Brandeis at 11 a.m. on Friday, November 15 in the quarterfinal before a matchup against either third-seeded WashU or sixth-seeded NYU in the second round. The semifinal will be played at 3 p.m. with the consolation semifinal scheduled for 5 p.m.
