Case Western Reserve University graduate student guard Anthony Mazzeo was named to the D3hoops.com Team of the Week and selected as the University Athletic Association Athlete of the Week for Men's Basketball, while Head Coach Todd McGuinness was named the HoopDirt.com presented by Just Play Solutions.
The honors come after the Spartans' 2-0 performance at the D3hoops.com Classic, during which the team claimed an 87-74 win over then-fourth-ranked Oswego State (which moved to 10th in this week's poll) followed by a 98-87 victory against Clark. CWRU improved to 11-0 with the victories, matching the best start in program history and coming within one triumph of the longest winning streak in team history, while rising to second in this week's D3hoops.com Top-25.
Mazzeo was named the Most Valuable Player of the 2023 D3hoops.com Classic after averaging 28.0 points per game during the Spartans' two victories, shooting 64.5% (20-31) from the floor, including 50.0% (8-16) from three-point range, and added an 88.9% (8-9) mark from the free throw line. He also led the team with 7.0 rebounds and 7.0 assists per game. During the team's 87-74 win over fourth-ranked Oswego State on Thursday, he led all Spartans with 26 points and a career-high seven assists, while adding six rebounds. He shot nine-of-18 from the floor during the game, including four-of-11 from three-point range, and connected on four-of-five free throw attempts. Mazzeo followed that with a season-high 30-point showing during the team's 98-87 win over Clark on Friday. He shot 11-for-13 from the floor, including four-for-five from behind the three-point line, and also led all CWRU players with eight rebounds while matching his career-high with seven assists for the second-straight night.
Mazzeo is the first Spartan to be named to the D3hoops.com Team of the Week this season and the sixth all-time, joining Matt Clark (week 13 of the 2015-16 season), TJ Duckett (week 3 of the 2016-17 season and week 9 of the 2017-18 season), Cole Frilling (week 1 of the 2022-23 season), Mitch Prendergast (week 12 of the 2022-23 season), and Umar Rashid (week 13 of the 2022-23 season). This was the first time Mazzeo has secured the honor over his career, including his time as an undergraduate at Baldwin Wallace.
The UAA Athlete of the Week honor, which Mazzeo garnered for the third time this year, also encompassed CWRU wins over Hiram on December 11 and Earlham on December 17. Over the four games, Mazzeo averaged a team-high 19.8 points per game over the four contests, shooting 59.6% (28-47) overall, 52.0% (13-25) from three-point range, and 71.4% (10-14) from the free throw line, while adding 5.5 assists, 4.5 rebounds, and 1.0 steals per game. For the season, Mazzeo is averaging a CWRU-best 18.5 points per game this season on 52.5% shooting overall and 41.5% from three-point range. He has added 3.9 rebounds and 4.2 assists per game during the campaign.
McGuinness has guided the Spartans to their second-straight undefeated non-conference regular season and to its highest ranking in program history this season. He holds a career record of 209-141 (.596) including a 95-69 mark (.579) at CWRU. This is the fourth time that McGuinness has claimed the HoopDirt.com D3 Coach of the Week award, having previously earned the honor during the 2017-18, 2021-22, and 2022-23 campaigns.
CWRU will now turn its attention to the start of UAA play this weekend. The Spartans will travel to Pittsburgh on Saturday, January 6 for a 3:00 p.m. tip-off against Carnegie Mellon.
