Seven NCAA Appearances |
In his nine seasons as the Head Men's Basketball Coach at Case Western Reserve University, Todd McGuinness has helped lead the program to new heights.
Under McGuinness' leadership, the Spartans have recorded the three best seasons in program history and set program records for wins in three consecutive seasons from 2021-24. CWRU has made the first three NCAA Tournament appearances in program history during McGuinness' tenure, while winning the University Athletic Association Championship for the first time in 2022-23 and repeating the feat in 2023-24. Since the start of the 2021-22 season, CWRU has notched a 74-32 overall record (good for a .698 winning percentage). CWRU has gone 5-3 in NCAA Tournament play under McGuinness, reaching the Round of 16 twice (in 2022 and 2024).
Of the 31 weeks in program history that the team has been ranked in the top 25 nationally by D3hoops.com, 30 have been during McGuinness' tenure. CWRU was nationally ranked throughout the entire 2023-24 season, climbing to as high as second, the highest ranking in program history, and finishing the year ranked 12th, the best final ranking ever by a Spartan team. CWRU finished the campaign with a 23-5 overall record, marking the most wins in a season in program history.
McGuinness eclipsed the 100-win mark for his CWRU career during the 2023-24 season and stands at 107-74 during his time as a Spartan, good for a .591 percentage, the best by any coach in program history. He also surpassed 200 career wins during the campaign and holds a 221-146 record (.602) over his 15 years as a head coach, which includes seven years at Hartwick. His teams have qualified for the NCAA Division III Championships on seven occasions, including the three at CWRU.
McGuinness has coached two players - guards Mitch Prendergast (2022-23) and Anthony Mazzeo (2023-24) - to D3hoops.com All-America honors, as they became the first two players in program history to receive All-America acclaim from the organization. As CWRU's head coach, he has mentored his players to eight all-region and 13 All-UAA honors.
McGuinness, a Pittsburgh native, was named the Spartans' head coach on July 16, 2016, after spending the previous seven years as the head coach of Hartwick College in Oneonta, New York. While at Hartwick, he compiled a 114-72 overall record for a .613 winning percentage and the third-most wins by a head coach in the program's history. His teams qualified for the NCAA Championships four times during his tenure and won three Empire 8 Championships, the first in the program's history. McGuinness was named the Empire 8 Coach of the Year during the 2011-12 campaign and coached his players to two Conference Player of the Year awards, two Conference Rookie of the Year honors, and two Empire 8 Tournament Most Valuable Player awards.
McGuinness previously served a stint as the assistant coach of the CWRU varsity program and head coach of the junior varsity squad from 2006 through 2009. During his three seasons with the Spartans, he helped mentor University Athletic Association Rookie of the Year Kevin Herring in 2007-08 (just the second in the program's history), while the 2008-09 team recorded the most conference victories by a CWRU squad in nine seasons.
Before his time as an assistant at CWRU, McGuinness was an assistant coach at both Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, New York, from 2004-06, and at Hartwick from 2003-04.
McGuinness played collegiately at Bethany College in Bethany, West Virginia, where he received his bachelor's degree in Physical Education in 2002. While at Bethany, he was a three-year starter and a two-year co-captain, leading the Bison to two Presidents' Athletic Conference Championships and an NCAA Tournament appearance in 2002. He earned his Master of Arts in Coaching and Athletics Administration from Concordia University Irvine in May 2020.
