Wrestlers Win Two Duals on Senior Day

The Case Western Reserve University wrestling team earned a pair of wins at the Dr. Si Ostrach Duals on Saturday at the Veale Center in Cleveland, defeating Waynesburg University 27-19 and St. John Fisher University 20-19, but falling to Albion College 27-17.

The Spartans improved to 8-2 in dual matches, while the Yellow Jackets fell to 1-16, the Cardinals moved to 8-1, and the Britons improved to 10-6.

Prior to the third match of the day, the Spartans celebrated their three five-year team members—graduate students Stephen Andryc, Mitchell Arch, and Alex Torres—as part of Senior Day.

CWRU 27, Waynesburg 19

Following a pair of forfeits to start the match, sophomore Art Martinez extended the Spartan lead with his team-leading seventh technical fall of the season. Martinez defeated JT Hollyfield 16-1 in 5:33 to make the match score 17-0. The Yellow Jackets scored with a 10-9 decision at 149 pounds, but sophomore Thomas Wagner gave CWRU an 18-point advantage with a 12-0 major decision at 157 pounds.

Waynesburg followed with wins in the next four matches to cut its deficit to just two, 21-19. However, a forfeit in the final match gave the Spartans the victory in the dual.

Albion 27, CWRU 17

The teams traded decisions to start the dual with Albion winning at 125 pounds and Case Western Reserve taking the 133-pound match. Sophomore Jacob Gregg secured the win with a 3-2 victory over Koen Eberhard. Martinez followed with a 10-4 decision giving CWRU a 6-3 lead after three matches.

However, the lead was short-lived as the Britons won the next four matches to take a 21-6 lead. Junior Aidan Gassel ended the streak with a pin at 184 pounds, beating Bernard Harrison in 6:49. It was his third pin of the season. First-year Simon Bishop followed with a 22-5 technical fall in 5:56, his third of the season, to make the score 21-17. However, the Britons clinched the match with a pin at 285 pounds.

CWRU 20, St. John Fisher 19

Sophomore E.J. Alizio gave CWRU an early lead with a sudden victory at 125 pounds. St. John Fisher won the next four matches by decision to take a 12-3 lead.

Arch brought the Spartans within three with his team-leading 19th pin of the season at 165 pounds. Arch defeated Jeremy Devine in 1:45. Bishop followed with his fourth career pin, quickly giving CWRU a 15-12 lead in 27 seconds. Gassel continued the Spartan winning streak with a 21-6 technical fall in 5:24, his second of the campaign.

With the score at 20-12, the Cardinals earned a major decision at 197 pounds to trail by just four with one match remaining in the dual. However, St. John Fisher could only manage a decision at 285 pounds, giving CWRU a one-point win to close the day.

The Spartans will next travel to Wheaton, Illinois, for the historic Pete Willson Invite hosted by Wheaton College. Action is slated to begin on Friday, January 26 at 12 p.m. ET.
