Behind a 71st minute goal from junior midfielder Sydney Schenk and a program record setting performance from senior goalkeeper Maggie Storti, the seventh-ranked Case Western Reserve University women's soccer team defeated Penn State Behrend 1-0 on Wednesday night at DiSanto Field in Cleveland.
The Spartans improved to 7-0-1 on the season, extending their regular season non-conference undefeated streak to 41 matches. CWRU plays its last regular season non-conference match of 2023 on Sunday. The Lions fell to 3-4-0 overall.
Storti recorded her fourth shutout of the season in goal to set the program career record. It was the 22nd of her career, surpassing the previous record of 21 by former Spartan Anna Kennedy from 2008-11. Storti saved one shot, increasing her save percentage to 0.870 and dropping her goals against average to 0.38. Overall, CWRU has shut out five opponents in eight matches, allowing just three goals all season.
After a scoreless first half, Schenk came off the bench to break the tie. She was inside the box beyond her defender and received a leading pass from first-year midfielder/forward Avery Reiman. Schenk shot the ball past the oncoming goalkeeper and into the bottom corner of the goal to put the Spartans on the board. It was her first goal of the season and the fourth of her career. Reiman earned her first career assist on the play.
Overall, Case Western Reserve outshot Behrend 24-2 in the match with 13 players recording at least one shot. Sophomore midfielder/forward Ceci Dapino and sophomore midfielder Jamie Goldfarb each had a team-high four shots.
CWRU will end its non-conference slate on Sunday with a trip to Columbus, Ohio, to face Capital University. Kickoff is scheduled for 5 p.m.
