No. 7 CWRU Ends Non-Conference Play with Shutout of Capital

The seventh-ranked Case Western Reserve University women's soccer team concluded its regular season non-conference schedule with a 2-0 victory over Capital University at Bernlohr Stadium in Columbus, Ohio on Sunday evening.

The Spartans remained undefeated with the win, improving to 8-0-1 on the season. The win also extends the team's regular season non-conference unbeaten streak to 42 matches and into the 2024 campaign. The Comets fell to 4-4-1 with the loss.

In the 26th minute, CWRU broke the deadlock with a penalty kick goal. Following a save by the Capital goalkeeper, sophomore midfielder/forward Ceci Dapino was taken down in the box by a Comet defender to earn the penalty. Senior midfielder Aniya Hartzler calmly finished her third career penalty kick goal to give the Spartans the early lead. It was her first goal of the season and the 13th of her career.

Hartzler's goal, the 15th this season for Case Western Reserve, was the 1,000th goal in the program's 40 season history.

Sophomore forward Andrea Silva doubled the Case Western Reserve advantage in the 71st minute with her first goal of the season. Sophomore forward Molly Shamah easily dribbled past a defender on a run down the left side of the field and entered the box unmarked. She crossed the ball toward the middle of the pitch where Silva quickly fired the ball into the back of the net. Shamah earned her first career assist on the play, and it was Silva's second career goal.

The Spartans prevented the Comets from scoring for the remainder of the contest to secure their sixth shutout of the season. Senior goalkeeper Maggie Storti (7-0-1) saved three shots to earn the win and her fifth individual shutout of 2023. She lowered her goals against average to 0.34 this season.

CWRU controlled possession throughout the match and carried out a relentless attack. The Spartans recorded 31 shots in the contest, a season high, including 11 on goal. Nine of the team's 10 starting field players attempted at least one try on goal, led by sophomore forward Alexis Sassower with five. Sassower also had a team-high three shots on target. Capital managed just seven shots in the contest with three on target.

With non-conference play complete, the Spartans will turn their attention to defending their University Athletic Association championship with the seven-match conference slate. Case Western Reserve opens UAA play at New York University on Saturday, facing the Violets in Newark, New Jersey, on the campus of Rutgers Newark University at 11 a.m.
