CWRU Winning Streak Ends with 6-5 Loss to Penn St.-Behrend

Box Score

The Case Western Reserve University baseball team saw its program-record 12-game winning streak come to a close with a 6-5 loss at Penn St. – Behrend in Erie, Pennsylvania in their penultimate game of the 2023 regular season on Saturday afternoon.

The loss dropped the Spartans to 26-13 on the season, while Penn State – Behrend improved to 20-15.

Junior third baseman Zack Carinci went two-for-five with a run and an RBI, hitting safely for his program-record 30th-consecutive game. Senior outfielder Trey Haley added a two-for-five day with a double and three runs batted in.

CWRU jumped out to a 1-0 lead after senior catcher Jack Anderson doubled to lead off the game and scored on a one-out single by Carinci. Behrend answered back with a run in the bottom of the first to even the score and took the lead in the bottom of the third with a run to go ahead 2-1. The Lions added four more runs in the fourth to take a 6-1 advantage.

The Spartans pulled closer in the top of the fifth, loading the bases with two outs and scoring a pair on a single by Haley, and then got back within a run in the seventh after a run scoring double from Haley and a bases-loaded single from senior first baseman Nick Talarico. However, the Spartans would leave the bases loaded in the seventh, as the Lions' pitchers retired the final eight Spartan batters of the game to preserve the lead.

Junior pitcher Reece Marley suffered the loss to fall to 6-3 for the season, allowing five earned runs in 3.1 innings of work. Junior Patrick O'Connor pitched the final 4.2 innings in relief, holding the Lions scoreless on three hits and striking out five batters.

The Spartans will wrap up their 2023 regular season on Sunday with a 12:00 p.m. first pitch at Nobby's Ballpark in Cleveland against DePauw University. Prior to the game, CWRU will hold a 'Senior Day' ceremony to honor its 11 graduating players.
