Box Score 2 The third-ranked Case Western Reserve University softball team celebrated Senior Day with a doubleheader sweep over the College of Wooster at Mather Park in Cleveland on Saturday, winning the first game 7-1 and prevailing in the second game 11-1 in five innings.
With the two wins, the Spartans extended their program record winning streak to 19 games and improved to 34-2 on the season. The Fighting Scots fell to 19-19 overall.
Sophomore infielder Isabella Russo drove in six runs across the two contests, going three-for-five and scoring three times. Junior infielder Kaila Nutter collected five hits in six at bats, scoring twice and driving in a run, and junior infielder KaiLi Gross had three extra base hits.
Game 1: #3 CWRU 7, Wooster 1
CWRU batted around in the first inning of the opening contest, scoring five runs on the strength of two home runs. Gross led off the frame with a solo shot, her third of the season and second in as many games. Seniors Amanda Riely and Carli Tucci reached base with a single and a walk, setting up Russo with one out. The sophomore crushed a 1-0 pitch to left field for her second home run of the season, making the score 4-0 in favor of the hosts.
Junior catcher Jordon Manworren drove in the fifth run of the inning with a two-out double.
Russo set a career high with her fourth run batted in of the afternoon, plating a run with a two-out single in the second inning to make the score 6-0. A single by first-year outfielder Brianna Landers in the fifth inning brought in the seventh run for the Spartans.
Sophomore pitcher Lexi Miskey earned her 21st win of the season, pitching four shutout innings and allowing just one hit with three strikeouts. Miskey improved to 21-0 on the season, tied for the second most wins in a single season in program history. Junior Jenna Jaklich earned her third save with three solid innings of relief, striking out four and allowing just one unearned run on one hit.
Game 2: #3 CWRU 11, Wooster 1 (5 inn.)
In the second game, Gross led off the bottom of the first inning with a triple, her fifth of the season, and scored on a groundout by junior outfielder Kela Jagoda.
Gross added two runs with a two-out double in the second inning to make the score 3-0. Jagoda collected her second run batted in with a single to score Gross. In the following inning, Tucci hit her team-leading sixth home run of the season to give the Spartans a 5-0 lead. Later in the frame, Manworren plated a run with a double.
CWRU scored five times in the fourth inning to put the game away. Riely started the scoring with a single to score Jagoda. Following a single by Tucci, Russo drove in a pair of runs with a double, and Nutter followed with a run-scoring double of her own. It was Nutter's third hit of the contest, setting a new career high. After the Spartans loaded the bases, Gross drew a walk to make the score 11-0.
Sophomore pitcher Kylie Hosey (12-2) earned the win with four shutout innings, allowing just two hits and recording three strikeouts.
Prior to the doubleheader, the Spartans honored their two graduating team members—Riely and Tucci—as part of the Senior Day celebration. The two seniors have guided the program to a 97-27 (.782) record over the last four seasons, the best four-year winning percentage in program history, and a trip to the NCAA Super Regional Round last season.
CWRU will end its season with a pair of road doubleheaders, starting with a trip to Alliance, Ohio, on Sunday, May 7 to face the University of Mount Union. First pitch of the first game is scheduled for 1 p.m.
