No. 3 Spartans Win 17th in a Row on Tucci Walk-Off Single

Box Score

With the score tied at five in the bottom of the seventh, senior outfielder Carli Tucci delivered a walk-off infield single, as the third-ranked Case Western Reserve University softball team defeated Marietta College 6-5 on Wednesday afternoon at Mather Park in Cleveland.

The win extended the Spartans' program record winning streak to 17 games and improved the team's record to 32-2. The Pioneers fell to 23-12 with the loss.

Marietta tied the score with two runs in the top of the seventh inning, spoiling sophomore Kylie Hosey's bid for a six-out save. With no outs and the go-ahead run on first, sophomore Lexi Miskey re-entered the circle, retiring the next three batters on a pair of groundouts and a strikeout to preserve the tie.

Junior outfielder Kela Jagoda reached on an infield single with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning. Following a walk, a wild pitch moved her to third base, just 60 feet away from winning the game. Tucci lined a pitch up the middle, with the ball ricocheting off the pitcher's glove and landing near second base. Jagoda easily scored on the hit, winning the game for the Spartans.

Marietta opened the contest with two runs in the first inning on a two-run home run by Rachel Kasmirski, her 12th of the season. CWRU responded with four runs in the bottom half of the frame to take the lead. After singles by junior infielder KaiLi Gross and Jagoda, Tucci delivered a two-run double to tie the score. With two outs, junior outfielder Stevie Rieger plated a pair of runs with a double of her own to put the Spartans ahead.

Gross increased the Case Western Reserve lead in the following inning, hitting her second home run of the season, a solo shot, to make the score 5-2. Neither team scored until the sixth inning, though the Pioneers left the bases loaded in the fifth.

Marietta scored its third run of the game in the sixth inning, welcoming Hosey to the game with two hits and a walk. Jillian Stracansky drove in a run with a sacrifice fly, but Hosey limited the damage with a strikeout and a groundout to end the threat.

CWRU was unable to score an insurance run in the bottom of the frame, and the Pioneers tied the score in the top of the seventh on a two-run single by Jess Brown.

Miskey started and ended the game in the circle, allowing two runs on two hits and six walks with six strikeouts. She earned her 20th win of the season to improve to 20-0, becoming just the fourth 20-game winner in program history. Breanna Zirkle fell to 5-1 on the season after giving up the winning run in the seventh.

Gross collected her 11th multi-hit game of the season, going two-for-four with a home run, a single, and two runs scored. Tucci tied a season high with three runs driven in, and Jagoda had her 12th multi-hit game in 2023, going two-for-four with two runs scored.

The Spartans will wrap up the home portion of their schedule on Saturday afternoon with a doubleheader against the College of Wooster starting at 1 p.m. Prior to the first game, the team will be celebrating its two graduating members—infielder Amanda Riely and Tucci—as part of Senior Day.
