CWRU Defeats #13 Denison 9-8 for Fourth-Straight Win

Box Score

The Case Western Reserve University baseball team recorded its fourth-straight win with an 8-6 victory over 13th-ranked Denison University on Sunday afternoon at Nobby's Ballpark.

The Spartans improved to 14-11 overall with the win. CWRU ended a 10-game winning streak for the Big Red, who fell to 19-5 overall with the setback.

Senior designated hitter Trey Haley went three-for-five with a double, two RBI, and a run scored and sophomore outfielder Nick Harms added a three-for-five showing with three runs scored. First-year outfielder Matt Trout was two-for-three at the plate with three RBI and two walks. Senior catcher Jack Anderson was two-for-five, extending his hitting streak to 21-straight games and junior third baseman Zack Carinci stretched his hitting streak to 16-straight contests with a one-for-five performance, including a pair of RBIs.

Denison scored a pair of runs in the top of the first inning but the Spartans responded in the bottom of the frame, evening the score on an infield single by first-year Trout that brought two runs across the plate. CWRU extended its lead with five runs in the bottom of the second, scoring a pair on an RBI single by Carinci, two more on a double by Haley, and a fifth run on a double by Trout.

A sacrifice fly from first-year Jasiah Harris extended the lead to 8-2 in the bottom of the third. Denison scored single runs in the fourth and sixth inning, trimming the Spartan lead to 8-4. A fielder's choice by Trout in the bottom of the eighth gave the Spartans a five-run lead heading into the ninth.

Denison threatened in the ninth inning, scoring four runs to get back within one and putting the game-tying runs on base at first and third with two away, but junior Patrick O'Connor recorded a strikeout to end the game for his fourth save of the year.

First-year Austin McGowan picked up the first win of his collegiate career in the game, improving to 1-0 on the campaign, while Denison's Manny Nager suffered the loss to drop to 1-2.

The Spartans will resume University Athletic Association next weekend, traveling to Brooklyn, New York for a four-game series against New York University starting on Friday, April 14 at 3:00 p.m.
