Anderson Matches CWRU Records for Hits & Runs in a Game in 17-7 Win at Wooster

Box Score

Case Western Reserve University senior catcher Jack Anderson matched the program's single-game records for hits and runs, helping lead the Spartans to a 17-7 win at the College of Wooster in Wooster, Ohio on Thursday afternoon.

The Spartans improved to 12-11 following the win, while Wooster dropped to 9-11.

Anderson went six-for-seven in the game, joining Andrew Gronski (2014) and Jake Ryan (2019) as the only players in program history with six hits in a contest. He also scored a program-record-tying five runs, marking the sixth time in program history a player has crossed the plate five times in a game, most recently accomplished by Ryan in 2019, also against Wooster. Anderson fell a home run shy of the cycle, recording three singles, two doubles, and a triple, while driving in a pair of runs, and raising his batting average to .451 for the season.

Anderson was not the only Spartan with a standout offensive performance on Thursday. Three CWRU players homered in the game with senior RJ Christie hitting the first of his career in the fifth inning, sophomore outfielder Nick Harms connecting for a two-run shot, his sixth of the season, later in the inning, and senior first baseman Nick Talarico hitting a two-run blast for his third of the campaign in the sixth inning.

First-year second baseman Jasiah Harris added a three-for-six day at the plate with a career-high five runs batted in, while Harms added four RBIs during the game. First-year outfielder Matt Trout was four-for-six and junior third baseman Zack Carinci was three-for-five with a pair of doubles and an RBI.

The team's 17 runs matched a season-high, while the 23 hits were the most in a game for the Spartans this season and tied for the second most in a game in program history.

Meanwhile, on the mound, junior Reece Marley struck out a career-high 11 batters over six innings of work, the third most in a game ever by a Spartan pitcher and only two shy of the program record. Marley allowed just three runs on eight hits and a walk and picked up the win to improve to 3-1 on the season.

The Spartans got off to an early start at the plate, as Anderson doubled on the first pitch of the game and scored with two outs on a double by Carinci to put CWRU ahead 1-0. The hits extended Anderson's hitting streak to 19-straight games and Carinci's to 14-straight games.

A two-out triple by Anderson in the top of the second scored two more runs, and he crossed the plate a batter later on a single by Harris to give CWRU a 4-0 lead after two innings. CWRU scored two more in the fourth and then broke the game open with five runs in the fifth and two in the sixth to go ahead 13-0. Wooster finally got on the board with three runs in the bottom of the sixth, but RBIs from Harris, sophomore outfielder Logan Andreykoand Trout in the eighth put CWRU in front 16-3 and a Harms sacrifice fly in the top of the ninth extended the Spartans' lead to 14 runs. The Fighting Scots added three runs, but it was too little too late as the Spartans completed the 10-run win.

The Spartans will return home to host Mount Union, which received votes in the latest D3baseball.com Top-25, at Nobby's Ballpark in Cleveland on Saturday, April 8 at 1:00 p.m.
