Spartans Split Doubleheader with Emory on Final Day of Series

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

The Case Western Reserve University baseball team split a doubleheader with Emory on Sunday, closing out the four-game series with an 8-7 setback in the opening game, followed by a 7-4 win in the team's final at bat in the second game of the contest.

With the split, the Spartans end the four-game series with an 11-11 overall record, including a 3-5 mark in University Athletic Association play, while Emory stands at 16-10 overall with a 5-2 UAA record.

Senior catcher Jack Anderson hit safely in both games to extend his hitting streak to 18-straight games, as did junior first baseman Zack Carinci, who stretched his hitting streak to 13-straight contests.

Game 1 – Emory 8, CWRU 7
CWRU nearly overcame a four-run deficit late, but ultimately suffered an 8-7 loss to Emory in the opening game of the doubleheader.

Emory scored two runs in the first inning but the Spartans answered back quickly with three runs of their own in the bottom of the frame to take the lead. Anderson led the inning off with a single and stole second, and first-year second baseman Jasiah Harris followed with a walk. A balk moved both runners up a bag, and Anderson scored a pitch later on a single by sophomore outfielder Nick Harms to cut the Emory lead in half. A throwing error on a stolen base attempt allowed Harris to cross the plate to tie the score and CWRU took the lead on a sacrifice fly from first-year designated hitter Sean Donahue that scored Harms, putting the Spartans in front 3-2.

Carinci extended the Spartans' lead to 4-2 with a solo home run in the bottom of the third, his first of the season, but Emory would regain the lead with five runs in the fifth, taking a 7-4 advantage, and added a run in the sixth to go ahead by four.

CWRU climbed back in the game with three more runs in the bottom of the sixth, all coming with two outs. A two-out double by sophomore outfielder Logan Andreyko scored sophomore outfielder Jay Smith, and then Andreyko crossed the plate a batter later on a single by senior third baseman Owen Levinson, and then after stealing second, Levinson scored on a base hit by Anderson to make the score 8-7.

The Spartans had a chance to tie the game in the eighth after Smith led off with a walk. Junior Connor Stephenson replaced him as a pinch runner, stole second, and then advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt, but was thrown out trying to score on a ground ball to second. CWRU went down in order in the ninth to end the game.

CWRU sophomore starting pitcher Kyle Gearding took the loss, allowing five earned runs in four and two thirds innings to drop to 4-1 on the year. Junior Tyler Horvath did not allow a hit while striking out five with one walk over the final two and a third innings in a solid relief outing.

Emory's Ryan Reynolds earned the win to improve to 4-2 on the year, while Tyler McLoughlin closed out the game with three scoreless innings for his fourth save of the year.

Game 2 – CWRU 7, Emory 4
CWRU scored four runs in its final at bat in the second game of the doubleheader to pick up a 7-4 win over Emory in the series finale.

For the first time in the four-game series the Spartans were able to jump out to the first lead of the game with three runs in the bottom of the first. CWRU opened the game with three-straight singles from Anderson, Harris, and Harms, and took a lead on a run-scoring ground ball by Carinci. The Spartans added two more runs in the inning, scoring on a sacrifice fly by Stephenson and a balk that allowed Carinci to cross the plate, taking a 3-0 lead after an inning.

However, CWRU's offense went quiet after the first inning, and Emory scored single runs in the first and seventh innings to pull back within a run. In the top of the eighth, Emory broke out for a pair of runs, taking their first lead of the game, but senior pitcher Jonathan Simon notched a strikeout to get the Spartans out of a bases loaded jam and keep the score at 4-3 heading into the bottom of the inning.

CWRU would have an answer in the eighth. Carinci doubled with one out in the inning, and after a walk to senior outfielder Kevin Mackenzie, Smith notched a pinch hit single to right, scoring Carinci to knot the tally at 4-4. A base hit by Andreyko loaded the bases, and with two outs in the inning, a fly ball off Levinson's bat dropped in front of the Emory centerfielder, scoring two runs and giving the Spartans a 6-4 advantage. An Emory error later in the inning allowed a fourth run to score, putting the Spartans ahead 7-4.

Simon worked around a two-out double in the ninth to retire the Eagles and earn the win, improving to 3-0 on the campaign. Emory's Mike Golob suffered the loss to fall to 1-1.

Carinci finished the game two-for-four with two runs, a double, and an RBI.

The Spartans will be back in action on Wednesday, traveling to Wooster, Ohio for a 4:00 p.m. non-conference game against the College of Wooster.
