Box Score 2 The eighth-ranked Case Western Reserve University softball team swept a doubleheader with Washington University in St. Louis on Saturday at Mather Park in Cleveland, winning the first game 8-3 and taking the second game 7-2 in five innings.
With the wins, the Spartans improved to 18-2 on the season and 4-2 in University Athletic Association contests. The Bears fell to 9-12 overall and 2-5 in the UAA.
Senior infielder Amanda Riely went four-for-seven on the day with five runs batted in and two runs scored. Sophomore infielder Isabella Russo and first-year infielder Elizabeth Berry both went three-for-six, with Russo driving in two and scoring twice and Berry scoring three times and adding an RBI.
Game 1: #8 CWRU 8, WashU 3
After a nearly three-hour delay due to inclement weather, the Spartans took an early lead in the first contest of the day, scoring a run in the opening frame. With two outs, Riely drove in senior outfielder Carli Tucci with a single to center field to give CWRU a 1-0 lead.
First-year outfielder Brianna Landers scored the second run of the game for the Spartans, crossing the plate on a single by junior infielder KaiLi Gross. Riely drove in two more runs on a two-out base hit, plating junior outfielder Kela Jagoda and Gross.
Russo increased the lead to five with a solo home run to lead off the third inning. It was her first home run of the season and the seventh of her career. Berry followed with a single and later scored on a WashU error to make the score 6-0.
After the Bears scored in the top of the fourth inning, CWRU reclaimed a six-run lead in the bottom of the frame on a double by Berry that scored sophomore Katelyn Lamm. Berry scored on a Landers single, making the score 8-1.
WashU scored two runs in the sixth inning to make the score 8-3, but those would be the final runs of the game for either team.
Riely, Jagoda, and Berry each had two hits in the game with Riely driving in a team-high three runs. Sophomore pitcher Kylie Hosey (7-2) earned the win, allowing just one run on five hits in five innings while striking out five batters.
Game 2: #8 CWRU 7, WashU 2 (5 inn.)
For the second straight contest, Case Western Reserve scored in the first inning, plating four runs in the initial frame. Gross led off with a single, stole second, advanced to third on a groundout, and scored on a WashU error. With two outs in the inning, first-year catcher Anna Gobeyn slugged a three-run home run to center field to give the Spartans a 4-0 lead. It was her fourth home run of the season and second in conference play.
The Bears recorded their first hit of the contest in the fourth inning, a two-run home run off the bat of Natalia Pilpil to make the score 4-2. With runners at the corners and just one out, the Spartans caught two runners stealing to end the threat and keep the lead at two.
In the fifth inning, Riely added two insurance runs with a single through the left side, scoring Russo and Jagoda. Riely later scored on a wild pitch to make the score 7-2.
The game was called after five completed innings due to darkness.
Sophomore pitcher Lexi Miskey (11-0) pitched all five innings, allowing two runs on three hits and four walks. She struck out eight batters to increase her season total to 101 in 69 innings. For her career, Miskey has 260 strikeouts, moving her into sixth place in program history.
Riely, Tucci, and Russo all had two hits in the second game.
The Spartans and Bears will conclude their four-game series tomorrow with a single game starting at 11 a.m.
