Box Score The Case Western Reserve University volleyball team swept Medaille University 25-11, 25-13, 25-10 inside Horsburgh Gymnasium in Cleveland, Ohio on Friday evening to start the CWRU Quad.
The Spartans improved to 5-1 with the win, while the Mavericks fell to 0-5.
CWRU started the match strong, opening the first set with an 11-2 run. Early on, Medaille cut its deficit to eight, but that was the closest the visitors would get as the Spartans won the first set 25-11. Four different Case Western Reserve players earned three kills, including junior middle blocker Jennifer Ngo, sophomore outside hitter Rea Marfatia, first-year middle blocker Amanda Ngo, and sophomore right side hitter/setter Carly Scott.
The teams battled early in the second set until CWRU used a 7-1 run to pull ahead 15-6. The Mavericks cut into the deficit with a 6-0 run, but the Spartans closed the set on a 10-1 run to take a 2-0 lead in the match. Marfatia led the Spartans with four kills in the set, with senior outside hitter Meara Reeder contributing three.
Medaille opened the third set by winning the first two points, but Case Western Reserve used a 7-1 run to claim a four-point advantage. The visitors remained close, only trailing by three, 13-10, in the middle of the set. Behind four service aces from sophomore setter Ansley Yamaato, the Spartans won the next 12 points to win the match.
Reeder led the squad with eight kills, while Marfatia finished with seven and five digs. Senior setter Sara Rogers and junior libero Alyssa Blessinger each had a team-high 10 digs. Yamaato and Rogers split the setting duties with Yamaato tallying 17 assists and Rogers adding 15. CWRU had a .333 overall hitting percentage in the match and 11 service aces.
The Spartans will wrap up the CWRU Quad on Saturday with a pair of matches inside Horsburgh Gymnasium starting at 10 a.m. First, the hosts will face Saint Vincent before facing Buffalo State at 12 p.m.
