For the second straight match, the 12th-ranked Case Western Reserve University women's soccer team scored four goals, defeating Otterbein University 4-0 on a rainy Saturday afternoon at DiSanto Field in Cleveland, Ohio.
The Spartans improved to 2-0-0 on the young season, while the Cardinals dropped to 0-1-1. CWRU has won 26 consecutive regular season non-conference matches, dating back to the 2018 season.
Case Western Reserve scored early in the contest, when junior forward Kati Davis put the team ahead in the 10th minute. Unmarked at the top of the box, Davis received a pass from first-year midfielder/forward Ceci Dapino. After one touch, Davis fired the ball low and into the back of the net for her first goal of the season. Dapino earned her first career assist on the play.
Just four minutes later, senior midfielder/forward Helina VanBibber doubled the CWRU advantage with her first goal of the season. Dapino chipped the ball from near midfield toward the goal. VanBibber sprinted to reach it and shot the ball low from the top of the box. The ball passed the diving Otterbein goalkeeper to make the score 2-0 and give Dapino her second assist of the game.
The Spartans did not score again until late in the second half. In the 79th minute, graduate student forward Camryn Hartman scored her second goal in as many matches. She took the ball away from a defender at the far edge of the box, dribbled toward the goal, and curled a shot past the post to make the score 3-0.
In the 85th minute, senior forward Aniya Hartzler tallied the team's fourth goal of the match. Taking a corner kick from the far flag, Hartzler curved a shot high that deflected off a defender and into the goal. It was the second goal of the season for Hartzler and the eighth of her career.
Overall, Case Western Reserve outshot Otterbein 21-8, with the hosts tallying nine shots on goal. Hartman led the way with seven shots, while three players each had two shots on goal.
In the net, junior goalkeeper Maggie Storti earned her first shutout of the season and the 11th solo shutout of her career. She saved four shots and improved her record to 2-0-0 this season.
The Spartans will play away from DiSanto Field for the first time this season on Friday, September 9, when the team travels to Berea, Ohio to face Baldwin Wallace. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
