Volleyball Splits on Second Day of Great Lakes Cross Over

The Case Western Reserve University volleyball team split a pair of matches on Saturday on the final day of the Great Lakes Cross Over at the Cedar Point Sports Center in Sandusky, Ohio. The Spartans defeated Western Connecticut State University 3-0 but fell to Smith College 3-2 in the second match.

CWRU ended the weekend with a record of 3-1. The Wolves dropped to 0-4 after play on Saturday, while Pioneers improved to 3-1.

CWRU 3, WestConn 0 (25-12, 25-13, 25-17)

In the morning matchup, CWRU swept WestConn to win the team's third straight contest. Sophomore setter Ansley Yamaato grabbed the majority of the team's assists, tallying 20 to go along with four digs. Junior libero Alyssa Blessinger led the team with 14 digs and recorded four service aces.

On the attack, sophomore right side hitter Carly Scott led the team with a career-high eight kills on a .615 hitting percentage. First-year middle blocker/right side hitter Amanda Ngo added seven kills, and fellow first-year outside hitter Kalli Wall recorded six kills on a .444 hitting percentage.

Smith 3, CWRU 2 (25-10, 21-25, 25-23, 17-25, 7-15)

The Spartans dropped their first match of the season to end their time in Sandusky, falling in five sets to the Pioneers. After CWRU claimed two of the first three sets, Smith rallied to win the fourth and fifth sets and claim the victory.

Wall led the Spartan attack with 14 kills, a new season high. Amanda Ngo tallied eight kills, with junior middle blocker Jennifer Ngo adding six. Yamaato and senior setter Sara Rogers each contributed 17 assists, and Rogers recorded three service aces. Defensively, Blessinger had a team-leading 11 digs, Jennifer Ngo blocked six attacks (three solo, three assists), and Amanda Ngo blocked five attacks (two solo, three assists). Sophomore outside hitter Rea Marfatia recorded seven digs and eight kills.

Case Western Reserve will play its first match of the season at home on Wednesday, September 7 at 7 p.m. when the University of Mount Union visits Horsburgh Gymnasium.
