Box Score The Case Western Reserve University volleyball team swept Baldwin Wallace University 25-17, 25-17, 25-21 at Horsburgh Gymnasium in Cleveland, Ohio on Wednesday night, extending its winning streak to five matches.
The Spartans improved to 8-1 on the season with the win, while the Yellow Jackets fell to 6-3. Case Western Reserve has recorded sweeps in six of its eight wins, including in each of the last four matches.
Five different CWRU attackers—junior middle blocker Jennifer Ngo, sophomore outside hitter Rea Marfatia, first-year middle blocker Amanda Ngo, sophomore right side hitter Carly Scott, and senior outside/right side hitter Gianna Lambert—recorded at least six kills in the match. Marfatia led the way with nine while also adding 12 digs. Defensively, both Jennifer Ngo and Amanda Ngo totaled five blocks, and junior libero Alyssa Blessinger paced the team with 18 digs. Senior setter Sara Rogers and sophomore setter Ansley Yamaato each contributed 13 assists.
The Spartans started the first set with a 6-0 run on the service of Blessinger. Baldwin Wallace cut the deficit to just one, 9-8, to force a CWRU timeout. Coming out of the huddle, Case Western Reserve went on a 10-3 run to lead 19-11 with Marfatia and Scott each adding two kills during the run. Following two BW kills, the Spartans used a 5-0 run to come within one point of clinching the set. The hosts claimed the first set four points later on a solo block by Amanda Ngo.
CWRU had a 7-5 advantage in the second set before embarking on a 9-3 run to lead by eight points. Jennifer Ngo had two of her three service aces during the run, with Yamaato adding one. The visitors responded by claiming six of the next eight points to trim their deficit to four. After the teams traded six points, the Spartans closed the set with four straight points to lead 2-0 in the match.
After falling behind 3-1 in the third set, the Spartans won seven of the next eight points to claim an 8-4 lead. Baldwin Wallace tied the score at 8, 10, and 11 before claiming a 12-11 advantage. CWRU rallied back, using kills from Amanda Ngo, Scott, and senior outside hitter Meara Reeder to start a 5-0 run. BW would not go away, taking a one-point lead at 18-17. The Spartans again retook the lead with four straight points and led 24-20 on a kill by Lambert. Following a Yellow Jacket kill, Marfatia clinched the sweep with her ninth kill of the match.
CWRU recorded nine service aces in the match, including three each from Marfatia and Jennifer Ngo. The Spartans tied a season high with 11 total team blocks.
Case Western Reserve travels to St. Louis, Missouri this weekend for the first University Athletic Association round robin of the season. Action starts on Saturday when the Spartans face #4 Emory University at 1 p.m. ET and the University of Chicago at 5 p.m. ET.
