2021-22 CWRU Women's Basketball Season Recap

The Case Western Reserve University women's basketball team returned to the court for the first time since the 2019-20 campaign, finishing the 2021-22 season with an 8-17 overall record.

The Spartans were led by senior guard/ forward Abbey Lawrence, who was on pace for the second-most points scored in a season in program history, before an injury derailed her campaign 20 games in. Her 383 points scored during the year and 987 over her career each rank as the 16th-best in program history. She earned All-University Athletic Association honors after leading the conference with 19.1 points per game, the 28th-best among all Division III players in 2021-22. Lawrence was also sixth in Division III with an 87.9% mark from the free throw line.

Lawrence also set the program record for points in a game, scoring 45 against Waynesburg on November 16, tied for the most by a Division III during the campaign. She made a program-record 17 shots in the game on 25 attempts, en route to breaking the previous program single-game record of 41 points, set by former Spartan Kara Hageman during the 2016-17 season.

After Lawrence suffered her season-ending injury, junior guard/ forward Isabella Mills stepped up as the team's top scoring option, leading the team in points in four of the team's final seven games, including a pair of 20-point efforts. Mills earned an honorable mention to the All-UAA Team following the season, and finished the campaign averaging 12.6 points, 6.2 rebounds, and 2.0 assists per game, while also picking up 2.4 steals per game (third among UAA players) and 1.0 blocks per contest (eighth in the UAA). Mills also matched a program record with seven made three pointers against Denison on November 27, which had previously been set by Mary Herendeen in 2008.

One other CWRU single-game record fell during the year. First-year forward Evie Miller blocked seven shots in a game twice – once against Rochester on January 23 and then again a week later on January 30 against Washington – to break a program record of six, which had been set seven times previously, including earlier in the season by sophomore forward Kayla Characklis on November 24 against Albion.

Characklis was another key player for the team, averaging 11.0 points per game and a team-high 7.2 rebounds per contest, while also ranking second on the squad with 33 blocks and 22 steals during her first season of collegiate competition. Sophomore guard Margaret Terry added a team-high 2.4 assists per game, while junior guard McKenna Gross averaged 8.6 points and 2.2 assists per contest.

After opening the season with losses to a pair of teams that finished the year ranked among the top-25 nationally (14th-ranked Baldwin Wallace and 19th-ranked John Carroll), the Spartans claimed their first win of the season on November 13 against Heidelberg, 49-46. Led by Lawrence's record-setting performance, CWRU followed with a 91-67 win over Waynesburg in their next game, the first of four 90-point outputs from the team during the season.

CWRU added wins over Denison, Kenyon and Hilbert during non-conference play, each by at least 20 points, and entered UAA play with a 5-6 overall record.

The Spartans went on to win three games during the UAA season. CWRU bested Brandeis 57-49 on the road on January 16, before returning home and claiming a thrilling 93-89 overtime win against Washington University (Mo.) on January 30, just the third win for the Spartans all-time against the Bears. The Spartans also defeated Emory in overtime later in the year, claiming a 68-61 win in Atlanta on February 18.

In addition to the team's success on the court, nine members of the squad – senior Lawrence, juniors Gross, Mills and Claire Poulton, and sophomores Kennedy Boone-Sautter, Preet Gill, Sarah Mitchell, Terry and Adrienne Wachtman – each earned UAA Spring All-Academic recognition. Lawrence was also named a finalist for the Jostens Trophy, which recognizes student-athletes in Division III basketball for excellence in the classroom, on the court, and in their respective communities.
