The Case Western Reserve University men's swimming and diving team completed a historic 2021-22 season, breaking seven school records and sending one swimmer to the 2022 NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving Championships.
Sophomore Ethan Chuang, who broke one school record as an individual and was a member of two record-breaking relays, represented the Spartans at NCAA Championships in Indiana. He finished 18th in the 200-yard breaststroke, 22nd in the 100-yard breaststroke, and 47th in the 100-yard individual medley. Chuang's time of 2:01.91 in the 200 Breast was the fastest among Spartans during the season and third-fastest in program history. Earlier in the season, at the Midwest Invitational, he broke the program record in the 100 Breast with a time of 54.74 seconds.
The Spartans broke four school records at the 2022 University Athletic Association Swimming & Diving Championships. Chung and juniors Connor Chignell, Anatole Borisov, and Campbell Patterson set a school record in the 200 Medley relay; Chuang, Chignell, Borisov, and first-year Jackson Pollard set a record in the 400 Medley relay; and Pollard, Patterson, first-year Peter Meng, and junior Andrew Smith broke the record in the 400 Free relay. Individually, Meng swam a program-best time of 15:45.41 in the 1,650 Free at the UAA Championships, which was a NCAA 'B' cut time. Overall, the Spartans finished sixth in the conference with 671 points with Chuang placing fifth in the 100 Breast and Meng placing seventh in the 1,650 Free.
Later in the season, at the two-day Midwest Invitational in Chicago, CWRU finished first out of five teams with 675 points. Five Spartan relays, the 200 Free, 400 Free, 800 Free, 200 Medley, and 400 Medley, won their events, while sophomore Hunter Forsythe placed first in the 400 IM. In addition to Chuang's school record in the 100 Breast, the 400 Free relay of Pollard, Meng, Patterson, and Smith recorded a NCAA 'B' cut time.
Competing primarily against Division I and II competition at the three-day Magnus Cup in November at Cleveland State University, Case Western Reserve turned in a plethora of top times. The 400 Free Relay of Pollard, Patterson, Meng, and Smith broke the school record in the event for the first time, with Pollard turning in a program record in the 100 Free, leading off the relay with a time of 45.88 seconds. In the 50 Free race, Patterson had the fastest time by a Spartan during the 2021-22 season, while Smith did the same in the 200 Free. Earlier in the meet, Smith set the school record in the 200 IM. Chuang (100 Breast) and Butler (1,650 Free) each broke school records that were eventually bested later in the season.
Case Western Reserve finished the 2021-22 campaign with a 4-3 record in dual meets.
In addition to their work in the pool, the Spartans were recognized as a team for their academic achievements by the College Swimming & Diving Coaches Association of America, as the team received Scholar All-America honors with a team grade point average of 3.59 during the fall semester, 14th highest among Division III men's teams.
