Yeung Walk-Off Home Run Powers Softball to 'Senior Day' Win

Box Score

With one out and a runner on base in the bottom of the seventh inning and the Case Western Reserve University softball team trailing Carnegie Mellon University by a run, senior infielder Grace Yeung stepped to the plate. Shortstop KaiLi Gross had already hit a solo home run to lead off the inning, as the Spartans entered the frame down 5-3.

On the first pitch to Yeung, she delivered a walk-off two-run home run to give the Spartans a 6-5 'Senior Day' win on Sunday afternoon at Mather Park in Cleveland, Ohio.

CWRU improved to 24-9 on the season and finished the University Athletic Association schedule with a 16-3 record. The Spartans clinched the conference championship on Saturday with their second win. The Tartans end their season 15-19 and 6-13 in the conference.

Yeung's heroics would not have been possible without the Gross home run and a one-out single by first-year outfielder Isabella Russo in the previous at bat.

The homer was the sixth of the season for Gross. Yeung finished the game two-for-four at the plate with three runs batted in. She drove in 10 runs in the four-game series and collected six hits and three walks.

Carnegie Mellon opened the game with a run in the first inning, taking an early lead with a run-scoring double. Sophomore catcher Jordon Manworren quickly tied the score, leading off the bottom of the first with a solo home run, her second of the season. With two outs, senior infielder Liv Thomas drew a walk, and Russo followed with her first career triple to give the Spartans the lead. Russo scored on a double from Yeung to push the CWRU advantage to 3-1.

Carnegie Mellon regained the lead in the fifth inning with four runs. Scotty McGee led off the frame with a solo home run. The Tartans then put two runners in scoring position with one out in the inning, prompting first-year pitcher Lexi Miskey to enter the circle in relief of first-year pitcher Kylie Hosey. Following a strikeout, Audrey Pederson hit a three-run homer to put the visitors ahead 5-3.

Hosey allowed just one earned run on five hits in four and one-third innings while recording three strikeouts. Miskey (12-4) struck out five batters in two and two-third innings, allowing one unearned run on two hits and two walks. She earned the win in relief and leads the UAA with 112 strikeouts this season. Miskey shut out the Tartans in the sixth and seventh innings, allowing the Spartans to mount their comeback.

Russo collected two hits in the game and scored twice while also driving in a run. She had eight hits in the series, scoring six runs and driving in six. In addition to the home run, Manworren reached twice on walks.

The Spartans celebrated Thomas and Yeung, their two senior members, with a pregame 'Senior Day' ceremony. Case Western Reserve will end the regular season with a four-game non-conference homestand, starting on Wednesday, April 27 when the team welcomes Ohio Northern University to Mather Park for a doubleheader starting at 3 p.m.
