Baseball Shutout by WashU in Series Opener

Box Score

The Case Western Reserve University baseball team dropped the opening game of a four-game series against Washington University (Mo.) 10-0 on Friday afternoon at Nobby's Ballpark in Cleveland, Ohio.

With the loss, the Spartans fell to 18-16 on the season, including a 9-4 record in the University Athletic Association. Regardless of the loss, CWRU remained in first place in the conference standings, and will enter the final three games of the league schedule either tied for first or one game ahead of Emory, depending on the Eagles' results on Friday against Brandeis.

Washington improved to 11-18 overall with a 3-10 mark in the UAA.

After a scoreless first two innings, the Bears scored three in the third, two in the fourth, three in the fifth and two in the sixth to grab a 10-0 lead. The run rule forced an early end to the game after seven innings.

CWRU managed just three hits on Friday, with junior catcher Jack Anderson, and junior outfielders Flynn Lenahan and Kevin Mackenzie each registering a single.

Washington's Austin Sachen earned the win to improve to 4-2 on the year, while sophomore Reece Marley suffered the loss to drop to 4-4.

The Spartans and the Bears will continue their four-game series on Saturday with a doubleheader starting at 12:00 p.m.
