Softball Captures Eighth-Straight Win with 8-0 Triumph over NYU

Box Score

The Case Western Reserve University softball team defeated New York University 8-0 in five innings on Saturday night at the Krenzler Dome in Cleveland, Ohio to pick up its eighth-consecutive win.

With the win, the Spartans improved to 10-6 overall, including a 2-0 mark in University Athletic Association play. NYU fell to 5-10 overall with the loss.

First-year pitcher Lexi Miskey struck out a career-high nine batters and allowed just four hits and failed to walk a batter during the five-inning complete game shutout. She earned her fourth-straight win in the game, improving to 4-3 overall while notching her fifth complete game of the campaign and second shutout of the year. Miskey lowered her earned run average to 1.53 following the effort.

Meanwhile, the CWRU offense was able to capitalize off four NYU errors during the game, with seven of the team's eight runs on Saturday unearned. Sophomore shortstop KaiLi Gross went two-for-three with a run, a double, an RBI and a stolen base, while sophomore catcher Jordon Manworren added a one-for-two day at the plate with a double and an RBI.

CWRU broke through with four two-out runs in the bottom of the second inning. With the bases loaded, a wild pitch allowed Miskey, who was pinch running, to score the first run of the game. With sophomore third baseman Kaila Nutter batting, an error by the NYU first baseman allowed two more runs to score, and a double by Gross plated Nutter, and extended the Spartans' lead to 4-0.

The Spartans added two more in the bottom of the third, taking a 5-0 lead when sophomore left fielder Stevie Rieger scored on a ground-rule double by Manworren, and going in front by six runs after senior designated hitter Liv Thomas crossed the plate on a first-and-third steal play.

Gross led off the fifth inning with a single, stole second, and scored on a sacrifice bunt by Rieger, accompanied by a throwing error by the NYU pitcher. Rieger moved to second on the error, stole third, and scored on a throwing error by the catcher to end the game early with the eight-run rule.

With bad weather in Cleveland, Saturday's game was moved inside to the Krenzler Dome on the Cleveland State University campus. The case will be the same for Sunday's series finale, as CWRU and NYU will wrap-up their series with a single game on Sunday inside the dome at 10:00 a.m.
