Box Score Behind first-year pitcher Kylie Hosey's first career no-hitter, the Case Western Reserve University softball team defeated John Carroll University 5-1 in a rain-soaked six-inning game at Mather Park in Cleveland, Ohio on Wednesday.
The Spartans improve to 8-6 on the season, while the Blue Streaks fall to 4-5. The scheduled second game between the teams on Wednesday was postponed.
Hosey allowed no hits in five innings of work, striking out six batters and allowing one earned run. Her no-hitter is the first for CWRU since former Spartan Katie Dzierwa shut down Heidelberg on April 30, 2017, at Mather Park.
After Hosey struck out four batters in the first two innings, the Spartans scored two runs in the bottom of the second inning. Sophomore catcher Jordon Manworren, who finished the day two-for-two with two doubles and two runs batted in, doubled with one out. First-year outfielder Isabella Russo struck a single up the middle to score Manworren and get CWRU on the board. Russo, who advanced to second on the play, stole third and then scored on a groundout from senior first baseman Grace Yeung to give Case Western Reserve a 2-0 lead.
With rain beginning to fall in the top of the third inning, John Carroll scored a run without a hit. Kendall Trunzo walked, advanced to second on a groundout, advanced to third on a wild pitch, and scored on a wild pitch to cut the deficit to one.
However, the Spartans responded in the bottom half of the inning with two runs on a double from Manworren. Her double scored sophomore outfielder Stevie Rieger, who had doubled earlier in the inning, and junior second baseman Amanda Riely. Rieger went two-for-three at the plate and had two steals.
In the bottom of the fifth inning, Rieger singled and stole her way to third base. She scored on a sacrifice fly from senior infielder Liv Thomas for Case Western Reserve's final run. The game was called after the Spartans took the field for the top of the sixth inning due to storms.
With the win, CWRU extended its winning streak to six games. The Spartans host New York University on Friday at Mather Park to start a four-game series in the first University Athletic Association games since 2019.
