Box Score 2 The Case Western Reserve University softball team picked up a pair of wins at the Pioneer Classic in Elizabethtown, Kentucky on Sunday, defeating Hanover College 4-1 and Wittenberg University 8-1.
The Spartans improve to 7-6 on the season while the Panthers drop to 5-8 and the Tigers fall to 6-4.
Senior infielder Liv Thomas had her second career multi-homer game against Wittenberg, slugging two home runs and driving in three. She hit three home runs the last time the Tigers and Spartans met on May 2, 2021. Junior second baseman Amanda Riely went two-for-three and drove in a career-high three runs against the Tigers. CWRU first-year pitchers Lexi Miskey (3-3) and Kylie Hosey (4-3) each threw a complete game and combined to allow just one earned run on six hits.
CWRU 4, Hanover 1
With one out in the fourth inning, Riely doubled to left field to give the Spartans a runner in scoring position. She stole third and advanced home on a wild throw from the Hanover catcher to give Case Western Reserve a 1-0 lead. CWRU had four steals in the contest, including two from first-year right fielder Isabella Russo.
After Miskey retired the side in order in the fifth inning, the Spartans struck for three runs in the bottom half of the inning. Russo led off with a bunt single and stole second. After advancing to third on an error, she scored on a sacrifice fly from senior first baseman Grace Yeung. With two outs, sophomore third baseman Kaila Nutter singled. Sophomore shortstop KaiLi Gross reached and advanced to second on an error. Both Nutter and Gross scored on a double from sophomore left fielder Stevie Rieger to give CWRU a 4-0 lead.
Hanover scored on a two-out double in the sixth inning and brought the tying run to the plate in the top of the seventh, but Miskey recorded the final out to secure the win. Miskey lowered her ERA to 1.99 with her third consecutive complete game and fourth straight game allowing one earned run or fewer.
CWRU 8, Wittenberg 1
The Spartans hit four home runs to rout the Tigers and finish the Pioneer Classic with a 4-0 record. After Rieger reached first on an error, Riely started the scoring in the fourth inning with her second home run of the season. In the next at bat, Russo reached first on an error. Thomas followed with her first home run of the season to give Case Western Reserve a 4-0 advantage.
Wittenberg responded in the fifth inning with an unearned run to cut the deficit to three. However, Riely drove in Gross with a single for her third RBI of the contest in the bottom of the inning. Thomas added a solo home run in the sixth inning to put CWRU ahead 6-1, and Yeung hit her first home run of the season, a two-run shot, to finish the Spartan scoring.
Hosey lowered her ERA to 2.12 with her fifth complete game of the season.
Case Western Reserve returns home to Mather Park to start a six-game homestand on Wednesday. The Spartans face John Carroll in a doubleheader, with first pitch scheduled for 3 p.m.
