Kornaker Matches Single-Season Assist Record in Spartans' 80-70 Loss at Rochester

Box Score

Case Western Reserve University graduate student guard Griffin Kornaker dished out 10 assists on Sunday afternoon to match the program's single-season record, helping four different Spartans score in double figures, but it was not enough for the team, which suffered an 80-70 loss to the University of Rochester on Sunday afternoon in Rochester, New York.

The loss dropped the Spartans to 17-6 overall and to 7-5 in University Athletic Association play, while Rochester improved to 16-7 overall with an 8-5 conference ledger.

Kornaker's 10 assists, his fourth effort of 10 or more helpers this season, give him 145 for the campaign, matching the school record set by former Spartan Jim Fox during the 1996-97 campaign. He added two points and five rebounds in Sunday's contest.

Junior forward Cole Frilling and graduate student forward Brian Hines each scored a game-high 15 points, marking a season-high for Hines. Graduate student guard Mitch Prendergast and senior forward Ryan Newton added 14 points each, with Newton also pacing the squad with nine rebounds on Sunday.

The Spartans front court provided most of the offense in the first half, scoring 34 of the team's 37 points over the first 20 minutes, including 11 and 9 from starters Frilling and Hines, respectively, and 10 and 3 from Newton and sophomore forward Hunter Drenth off the bench. CWRU struggled from the floor early, but Newton provided a spark and scored seven of the team's first eight points after entering the game. While Rochester struggled to score early on as well, the Yellowjackets were able to take a seven-point lead with 10:28 left, 20-13, before a three by Drenth and a pair of free throws by Prendergast cut the deficit to two points. CWRU tied the game at 22-22 following a layup by Hines with 8:18 to play in the half, and the Spartans eventually took their first and only lead of the game on a free throw by Frilling with 6:20 left that put the team ahead 28-27. However, the Spartans' advantage was short-lived, as Rochester regained the lead 25 seconds later, and went ahead by as many as eight in the first half, before Frilling trimmed the lead to six points, 43-37, with a layup at the buzzer heading into halftime.

CWRU continued to trail during the early part of the second half, but remained close, and eventually tied the game at 53-53 with 12:39 left in the contest on a three-pointer by Prendergast. However, the Spartans could not take the lead, and the Yellowjackets responded with a 13-4 run to pull away and did not let CWRU back within five points for the remainder of the game.

CWRU was ultimately hurt by an uncharacteristically poor shooting performance from the free throw line on Sunday. After entering the game shooting a league-best 79.5% from the charity stripe, the Spartans made just 12 of their 23 attempts (52.2%) from the line in the loss. The Spartans shot 38.8% overall in the game, and 26.1% from three-point range.

Rochester's Brian Amabilino Perez led all scorers on Sunday with 20 points and added eight rebounds for the Yellowjackets.

Case Western Reserve will return home for its final game of the 2021-22 season next Saturday, February 26, as the Spartans will play host to Carnegie Mellon, with tip-off scheduled for 2:00 p.m. in Cleveland. The game will also mark 'Senior Day' for the Spartans, who will recognize their five graduating players prior to the start of the game – seniors Robert Faller and Newton and graduate students Hines, Kornaker and Prendergast.
