Box Score The Case Western Reserve University women's basketball team continued its best start in six seasons with a 77-53 non-conference win over Kenyon College at Tomsich Arena in Gambier, Ohio on Friday night.
The Spartans improved to 7-2 on the season for the first time since the 2016-17 season. The Owls dropped to 1-4 with the loss.
Four CWRU players scored in double figures, led by senior guard/forward Isabella Mills with 16 points. She also led the team with nine rebounds and four assists and added four steals. Junior forwards Kayla Characklis and Preet Gill contributed 12 points each, and junior guard Sarah Mitchell scored 10. Mitchell filled the stat sheet with five rebounds, four steals, a block, and an assist, and Characklis added four rebounds, an assist, a block, and a steal.
After trailing early, CWRU took the lead midway through the first quarter on a free throw by Mills. The Owls cut the deficit to one with less than a minute left in the frame, but sophomore guard/forward Lucy Vanderbeck hit a three-pointer to give the Spartans a four-point advantage heading into the second period.
Kenyon tied the score at 19 two minutes into the second quarter, but a layup by Characklis ignited a 9-0 Case Western Reserve run to give the visitors a lead they would not relinquish for the rest of the game. After leading by five at halftime, the Spartans outscored the Owls 16-7 in the third quarter to open up a 50-36 lead. Mitchell hit a layup at the buzzer to finish the frame in style.
CWRU led by as many as 28 points in the fourth quarter, putting the game away in the final frame by shooting 71.4% from the field. Overall, the Spartans made 47.5% of their shots while holding the Owls to just 32.2% shooting from the field. Case Western Reserve forced 21 turnovers, scoring 20 points off Kenyon mistakes, and held a 42-18 advantage on points in the paint.
The Spartans wrap up their year-end road trip with a visit to Granville, Ohio to face Denison on Wednesday, December 7 at 7 p.m. Following the game, CWRU will take a break for finals and return to action on January 1, 2023 to face Hilbert in Horsburgh Gymnasium.
