Box Score 2 The Case Western Reserve University volleyball team swept two matches at the Buzz Ridl Gymnasium in New Wilmington, Pennsylvania on Saturday, besting host Westminster College 3-0 (25-23, 25-19, 25-20) and Penn State Behrend 3-0 (25-14, 25-15, 25-16).
The Spartans improved to 17-4 with the two wins and have won nine of their last 10 matches. The Titans fell to 2-18 and the Lions dropped to 8-10.
CWRU 3, Westminster 0 (25-23, 25-19, 25-20)
Early in the first set, the Spartans led by as many as five points, 13-8, before the Titans responded to take a 17-15 lead. A block by senior outside/right side hitter Gianna Lambert and junior middle blocker Jennifer Ngo gave CWRU a 19-18 lead. Westminster won three of the next four points to claim a one-point advantage. However, a kill and solo block by sophomore right side hitter Carly Scott put the Spartans one point away from claiming the set at 24-22. The Titans won the next point, but a Ngo kill put the set away in favor of the visitors.
Back-to-back kills from first-year middle blocker Kiya Levy gave CWRU a seven-point advantage, 17-10, in the middle of the second set. The hosts could only cut their deficit to five, 21-16, before the Spartans won four of the next seven points to claim the second set by seven points.
After trailing by as many as four points, 20-16, the Titans cut their deficit to two with two straight points. However, the Spartans won five of the final seven points to win the match.
Levy led the team with a career-high seven kills on a .385 hitting percentage. Sophomore setter Ansley Yamaato paced the squad with 15 assists, while both senior setter Sara Rogers and junior libero Alyssa Blessinger had a team-high 10 digs.
CWRU 3, Penn State Behrend 0 (25-14, 25-15, 25-16)
After leading 8-7, Case Western Reserve used a 9-3 run to lead by seven points in the first set. Following a timeout, the Lions won three of the next four points to cut their deficit to five, but CWRU ended the set with a 7-1 run on the service of sophomore outside hitter Rea Marfatia.
A 9-2 PSU Behrend run gave the Lions a 12-8 lead in the second set, prompting a Spartan timeout. After the break, the Spartans tied the score with four straight points, then went on an 8-0 run on the service of Yamaato to lead 21-14. Though an attacking error ended the run, CWRU won the final four points to claim the second set by 10 points.
With the Spartans leading 17-11 in the third set, a kill by senior outside hitter Meara Reeder and back-to-back service aces by junior defensive specialist Lindsay Schamp gave CWRU a nine-point advantage. After the Lions cut the Spartan lead to seven, a Marfatia kill started a match-ending 4-2 run for Case Western Reserve.
Marfatia led the team with nine kills and a season-high 18 digs, and sophomore right side/outside hitter Chloe Maciejewski added a season-high seven kills. Schamp had three of the team's eight service aces, a new career best.
CWRU will play its penultimate non-conference contest on Wednesday, traveling to Hiram to face the Terriers at 7 p.m.
