Box Score The Case Western Reserve University volleyball team rolled to a 3-0 win (25-22, 25-21, 25-18) over crosstown rival John Carroll University on Friday night at Horsburgh Gymnasium in Cleveland, Ohio.
The win was the Spartans' seventh in their last eight matches, as the team improved to 15-4 overall for the season. The Blue Streaks dropped to 15-5 following the setback.
Sophomore Rea Marfatia led all CWRU players in the match with nine kills, hitting .212 for the match, while junior Jennifer Ngo added eight kills, seven digs, two aces, and five block assists. Sophomore Ansley Yamaato and senior Sara Rogers each had a team-high 16 assists, while Rogers and junior Alyssa Blessinger led the team with 12 digs apiece
The first set was played close, but the turning point came following a Spartan time-out late in the frame. Trailing 19-18 off the timeout, the Spartans quickly evened the score on a kill by Ngo, and then rallied on Ngo's serve for four more points to go ahead 23-18, before closing out the set 25-22.
After hitting just -.049 in the opening set, the Spartans rebounded with an impressing .350 mark in the second set to claim a 25-21 win and take a 2-0 lead in the match. CWRU trailed 18-15 in the second set and 20-18 before back-to-back kills by Marfatia evened the match at 20-20. The Spartans continued to rally, taking a 22-20 lead before John Carroll scored to pull back within a point, but CWRU scored the final three points in the set, securing the victory on a kill by first-year Amanda Ngo.
CWRU pulled away in the third set, hitting .200 and leading by as many as eight points in the frame, before wrapping up the match with a 25-18 victory.
The Spartans finished the match with a .165 to .080 edge in hitting percentage and held a 10-4 advantage in total blocks.
The Spartans will have a quick turnaround, traveling to New Wilmington, Pennsylvania tomorrow for matches against Westminster College at 4:30 p.m. and Penn State - Behrend at 6:30 p.m.
