Box Score

The Case Western Reserve University volleyball team bested Oberlin College 3-1 (25-20, 21-25, 25-17, 25-11) in a non-conference match at Philips Gymnasium in Oberlin, Ohio on Wednesday night.

With the win, the Spartans improved to 14-4 on the season, while the Yeowomen dropped to 7-8.

CWRU excelled defensively against Oberlin, tallying 12 total blocks and 64 digs. Three players recorded at least 13 digs, and three players contributed at least three total blocks, including first-year middle blocker Amanda Ngo who tied a career high with five, including a career-high four solo blocks. Junior libero Alyssa Blessinger led the team with 21 digs, while senior setter Sara Rogers added a season-high 13 digs.

Offensively, the Spartans were led by sophomore outside hitter Rea Marfatia with 15 kills and junior middle blocker Jennifer Ngo with 12 kills. Marfatia added 13 digs and three total blocks, while Ngo added four total blocks and five digs.

Following a back-and-forth beginning to the first set, CWRU used a 7-1 run to claim a 15-10 lead. Marfatia and Jennifer Ngo each had a kill and combined for a block during the run. Oberlin cut its deficit to two, 17-15, to force a Case Western Reserve timeout. Following the break, the Spartans won six of the next eight points to lead 23-17. Marfatia put the visitors one point away from clinching the set, and, after two Oberlin points, she finished the set with a kill.

After Case Western Reserve started the second set with a 6-1 run, Oberlin responded with a 10-2 run to lead 11-8. After the teams traded the next six points, Oberlin claimed a five-point advantage to prompt a Spartan timeout. Following a Marfatia kill, the hosts won the next five points to lead 21-12. However, the Spartans used an 8-1 run to cut their deficit to two. Jennifer Ngo scored four of the team's eight points with kills during the run. The Yeowomen won three of the next four points to claim the set and even the match score at 1.

With the score tied at 13 in the third set, the Spartans won the next five points on the service of sophomore setter Ansley Yamaato to take a lead they would never relinquish. Oberlin would only be able to cut its deficit to four, 20-16, before CWRU won five of the final six points to take a 2-1 match lead.

In the fourth set, the Spartans used an 11-2 run to claim a 10-point advantage. Jennifer Ngo contributed three kills, and first-year outside hitter Kalli Wall and sophomore right side hitter Carly Scott each added two kills during the run. CWRU led by as many as 14 points in the set, eventually prevailing 25-11 to win the match.

The Spartans welcome crosstown rival John Carroll to Horsburgh Gymnasium on Friday at 6 p.m. for a non-conference match.
