No. 4 Women's Soccer Defeats No. 15 Emory to Remain Unbeaten

Box Score

With a 1-0 shutout of #15 Emory University on Sunday afternoon at DiSanto Field in Cleveland, Ohio, the #4 Case Western Reserve University women's soccer team has a chance to secure the team's first undefeated regular season in program history next week. The Spartans also will look to claim their first University Athletic Association Championship in program history on Saturday, facing #9 Carnegie Mellon in the season finale.

CWRU improved to 14-0-1 overall and 5-0-1 in UAA play. The Spartans and Tartans, tied atop the conference standings with 16 points, will face off in a de facto UAA Championship Match on Saturday, November 5 at DiSanto Field at 3:30 p.m. The winner of the match will claim the conference championship and the league's automatic entry into the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament. With a tie, the teams would be declared co-champions, with CWRU earning the automatic bid on a goal differential tiebreaker. The five UAA wins for the Spartans set a new program record, and the win over Emory marks just the second in program history.

The Eagles fell to 11-4-0 on the season and 4-2-0 in conference play.

Senior defender/forward Merry Meyer scored the decisive goal in the 63rd minute on a corner kick, her third of the season. Graduate student forward Camryn Hartman kicked the ball from the near flag into the box, with it bouncing off an Emory defender to Meyer. The senior fired a shot from about 12 yards away from the goal into the lower right corner, beating the Emory goalkeeper to put the Spartans ahead. Hartman earned her team-leading seventh assist of the season on the play. The graduate student forward has eight points in conference play on three goals and two assists, second most in the UAA. Two of Meyer's three goals have been UAA game-winners with the other occurring in a 1-0 win over Chicago on October 16.

Early in the first half, the Spartans earned a penalty kick but were unable to convert from the spot when Emory goalkeeper Emma Miller made a diving save. CWRU then had three consecutive corner kicks but were unable to fire off a shot on the set pieces. Neither team had scoring chances for the remainder of the half, with the Spartans and Eagles combining for just six shots in the first 45 minutes.

In the first five minutes of the second half, Case Western Reserve pressed offensively, earning two corners and two shots, including one on target.

With time winding down in the match, Emory earned a free kick with under a minute to play. The Eagles pushed the ball into the box and were able to fire a shot that hit the crossbar. A Spartan clearance on the rebound ended any hope for the Eagles to find an equalizer, securing the historic win for the hosts.

Junior goalkeeper Maggie Storti saved three shots, earning her sixth shutout of the season and the 16th of her career, which ties her for third most in program history. Hartman led all players with three shots, and CWRU outshot Emory 10-6 overall. In a physical game, the teams combined for 27 fouls.
