The Case Western Reserve University volleyball team suffered a loss at the hands of undefeated Mount Union on Wednesday night in Alliance, Ohio, falling in three sets to the Purple Raiders, 25-21, 25-14, 25-16.

The loss dropped the Spartans to 2-3 overall on the campaign, while Mount Union improved to 5-0 for the season.

The Spartans led by two points in the first set, 19-17, after a kill by first-year right side hitter Chloe Maciejewski. However, Mount scored eight of the next 10 points to secure the 25-21 victory. The Purple Raiders went on an early run in the second set, leading by as many as 11 points. CWRU was able to cut down the advantage to nine, before Mount Union was able to close out the set and take a 2-0 lead in the match. The Spartans fared better in the third set, hitting .128 during the frame, and were down by just one point at 15-14 after a kill by sophomore Jennifer Ngo. However, the Purple Raiders once again went on run as they scored 10 of the next 12 points to claim the 25-16 set victory and close out the sweep.

Junior outside hitter Gianna Lambert led the team with seven kills, while Maciejewski hit a team-best .500 in the match and tied for second on the team with six kills. Sophomore libero Alyssa Blessinger added a team-best 15 digs, and junior setter Sara Rogers contributed 26 assists. CWRU hit .096 as a team for the match.

Case Western Reserve will look to rebound this weekend at the Pam Briggs Classic, hosted by Capital University and Otterbein University, as they start play on Friday, September 10 at 5:00 p.m. against Capital.
