Box Score 2 The Case Western Reserve University volleyball team split a pair of matches at home on Saturday, defeating Bethany (W.V.) College 3-0 in the early match, but falling 3-1 to Earlham College in the late affair to close out the second day of competition at the CWRU Tournament.
With the split, Case Western Reserve moved to 2-2 on the season.
The Spartans opened the day with a 25-9, 25-19, 25-15 win over the Bison. Junior outside hitter Gianna Lambert and first-year outside hitter Rea Marfatia paced the CWRU attack as they earh totaled seven kills. Junior setter Sara Rogers set up the offense, as she registered 25 assists.
Defensively, sophomore libero Alyssa Blessinger led the squad with 13 digs, while sophomore middle blocker Jennifer Ngo tallied six total blocks, including two solo.
Bethany dropped to 0-2 on the season with the loss.
In the second match of the day against Earlham, the Spartans lost the match 16-25, 25-23, 24-26 and 22-25. Lambert posted a team-high 12 kills, while Ngo added nine kills. Rogers registered 34 assists for the match, while also tallying 23 digs.
Defensively, Blessinger led the squad with 31 digs and first-year defensive specialist Deme Yianas contributed 22 to the team total.
With the win, Earlham improved to 3-2 overall in 2021.
Case Western Reserve will return to action when they travel to Alliance, Ohio to take on the University of Mount Union on Wednesday, September 8th at 7:00 p.m.
