Spartan Baseball Splits with Wooster on 'Senior Day'

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

The Case Western Reserve University baseball team battled back from a 13-6 loss in the first game of a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon to force a split with a 7-2 victory in the second game, behind a complete-game win from senior pitcher Matt Levine. Saturday's game also marked 'Senior Day' at Nobby's Ballpark, as the Spartans recognized the six senior players who are scheduled to graduate later this month.

Prior to the start of play on Saturday, the team honored its six seniors – catcher Tre Armstrong, Levine, shortstop Jacob Lott, catcher Jake Ryan, pitcher Tony Smodilla, and outfielder Benjamin Stawicki with a special ceremony. Together, the group has helped lead the team to an overall record of 77-39 during their four years on the team, including a UAA Championship in 2018 and an NCAA Championship appearance in 2019.

With the split the Spartans now stand at 19-9 overall, while Wooster's record moved to 23-10.

Game 1 – Wooster 13, CWRU 6
The Spartans struggled to contain the Wooster offense in the opening game of the doubleheader, falling 13-6 to the Scots.

Stawicki and sophomore second baseman Trey Haley each collected three hits for the Spartans in the game. Stawicki went three-for-five with two runs scored, an RBI and a double, marking the Spartans' only extra-base hit among their 10 total in the game. Haley added a three-for-six performance with a run scored and his third stolen base of the season.

Wooster broke the ice with a five-run second inning. CWRU inched back into the game with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second with Stawicki scoring on a sacrifice fly by junior outfielder Cole Jarrett, and Armstrong crossing the plate on an error. The Spartans pulled back within a run in the third inning, cutting the Scots' lead to 5-4 when sophomore first baseman Nick Talarico and Stawicki each scored on wild pitches.

However, Wooster would go on to extend their lead with seven unanswered runs, scoring two in the fourth, one in the fifth, and four in the seventh to go ahead 12-4. Stawicki drove in a run with a base hit in the eighth to cut the Scots' lead to seven runs, but Wooster answered back with a run in the top of the ninth. A throwing error allowed sophomore outfielder Flynn Lenahan to score in the bottom of the ninth, but it would be too little too late for the Spartans.

Dane Camphausen hit a pair of opposite field home runs to lead the Wooster attack. Starter Evan Faxon picked up the win for the Scots to improve to 5-1 overall.

CWRU junior starter Nick Denove suffered the loss to drop to 4-3 on the year.

Game 2 – CWRU 7, Wooster 2
Levine saved his best work for his last outing of the 2021 regular season, picking up his first complete-game win in nearly two years in a 7-2 win over Wooster.

Levine did not allow an earned run in the contest, and held Wooster to just two total runs on five hits and a pair of walks, while striking out six batters. The complete game was the third of his career, and the first since he hurled a shutout in an 11-0 win over Rochester during the 2019 NCAA Championships. Levine improved to 3-2 on the year and lowered his earned run average to 5.26 with the effort.

CWRU broke out for three runs in the bottom of the second inning to take the early lead in the game. First-year third baseman Zack Carinci led the inning off with a walk, moved to second on a base hit by sophomore catcher Jack Anderson, and scored on an RBI single by sophomore outfielder Kevin Mackenzie. Jarrett followed with a single to load the bases, and with Haley at the plate, a wild pitch allowed Anderson to score from third and give CWRU a 2-0 lead. Haley would walk to load the bases again, and Stawicki followed with a sacrifice fly to left, scoring Mackenzie and putting the Spartans ahead 3-0.

The Spartans added on two more in the third with Lott scoring on a sacrifice fly by Talarico, and Mackenzie driving in Carinci with another base hit to give CWRU a 5-0 lead after three innings. In the fourth, Armstrong tripled with one out to drive in Stawicki, extending the team's lead to six, and in the sixth, Ryan singled with one out and scored a batter later on a double into the left centerfield gap by Lott.

Levine held Wooster scoreless until the seventh inning, when the Scots struck for a pair to cut the lead to 7-2. He would work around a single in the eighth and retired the side in order in the ninth to notch the 120-pitch complete-game effort.

The Spartans offense amassed 12 hits in the game, including two apiece for Haley, Lott, Anderson and Mackenzie.

CWRU dealt Wooster starter Jay DiBacco his first loss of the season, as he fell to 6-1 on the year.

The Spartans will wrap-up their 2021 regular season on Sunday at home with another doubleheader against Wooster starting at 1:00 p.m.
