Brannam Becomes CWRU's All-Time Single-Season Wins Leader as Spartans Sweep Wooster

Case Western Reserve University senior Sidney Brannam pitched all six innings in the second game against the College of Wooster to become the program's all-time single-season wins leader, and help the Spartans to a doubleheader sweep of the Fighting Scots on Monday, with an 11-8 win in the first game and a 12-4 triumph in six innings during the second contest.

Brannam's win was her 22nd of the season, as she passed former Spartan Ilissa Hamilton (2018), for the most single-season wins in program's history.

First-year Kela Jagoda paced the team at the plate, going five-for-six over the two games with three runs batted in and three runs scored. Senior Sydney Wagner, and juniors Liv Thomas and Grace Yeung each added two RBI's over the two games.

The sweep raised the Spartans' record to 27-9 for the season. CWRU also improved to 17-1 in home games at Mather Park this season.

Wooster dropped to 22-10 on the season with the two losses.

Game 1: CWRU 11, Wooster 8
The Spartans started the scoring in the first game of the day, as senior Dusstyn Reynolds roped a RBI single to center field that scored senior Sarah Miller to give CWRU a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning.

The Fighting Scots got the board with two runs in the top of the second to claim a 2-1 advantage, before the Spartans responded in the bottom half of the inning to even the score at 2-2 after two innings of play.

Wooster erupted for five runs in the third and another run in the fourth to take a 8-2 lead after four innings of play.

CWRU's offense came alive in the bottom of the fifth as the team pushed across five runs to cut the deficit to 8-7. Included in the inning was a RBI single from Jagoda and a two-run home. run from Thomas. The home run was Thomas' ninth of the season.

The Spartans' continued to hit the ball in the bottom of the sixth as they scored four more runs to take an 11-8 lead over the Fighting Scots. Jagoda and Miller each registered RBI doubles in the inning.

Brannam started and went 2.2 innings before Thomas appeared in relief to finish the game. Thomas allowed just one run on three hits during her 4.1 innings of relief. She earned the win to improve to 2-0 on the season. Olivia Johnson started for Wooster and suffered the loss, falling to 11-6 on the year.

At the plate, Jagoda went a perfect three-for-three with two RBI's and two runs scored, while Thomas went one-for-three with one home run and two runs batted in.

Game 2: CWRU 12, Wooster 4 (6 innings)
In the second game of the day, the Fighting Scots struck first as they put up a run in the top of the first inning. The score remained 1-0 until the bottom of the second when the Spartans' struck for three runs in the inning to take a 3-1 lead. Included in the inning were RBI singles from Yeung and Jagoda.

CWRU added a run in the bottom of the third when Miller scored on a RBI groundout from senior Arisa Cleaveland to push the lead to 4-1.

Wooster cut the lead to 4-3 in the top of the fourth as they scored a pair of runs in the inning. The Spartans answered quickly with two runs of their own in the bottom of the fourth to increase the lead to 6-3.

CWRU pushed across four more runs in the bottom of the fifth as the team capitalized on a couple of Wooster errors. In addition, Wagner hit a RBI single in the inning and Yeung tallied a RBI double.

The Fighting scots scored a run in the top of the sixth, but the Spartans closed out the game with two runs in the bottom of the sixth to secure the 12-4 run-rule shortened victory. Senior Hope Yashnik had a RBI groundout during the inning and Wagner ended the game with a sacrifice fly to right field that scored sophomore Carli Tucci.

Brannam started and earned the win, as she improved to 22-3 on the season. She pitched all six innings allowing four runs (one earned) on five hits and four walks, while striking out four batters.

Yeung and Jagoda led the Spartans at the plate as they tallied two hits apiece, including two RBI's from each player.

With the sweep on Monday, Case Western Reserve completed a strong finish to the 2021 regular season. CWRU won six of their last seven games to finish above .500 for the 10th consecutive season.
