Box Score 2 The Case Western Reserve University softball team split a doubleheader at home against Hiram College at Mather Park on Friday afternoon, winning 5-4 in the first game, but dropping the second contest by a score of 5-2.
With the split of the doubleheader, the Spartans moved to 23-9 overall, while Hiram now stands at 20-13 on the season.
Game 1: CWRU 5, Hiram 4
The Terriers opened the scoring early during the first game of the day, as they pushed two runs across in the top of the first to take the 2-0 lead. However, the Spartans quickly responded the next half inning as seniors Dusstyn Reynolds and Hope Yashnik each registered RBI singles to even the score at 2-2.
The score remained tied until the bottom of the third when junior Liv Thomas hit a RBI double to left field that scored seniors Sarah Miller and Arisa Cleaveland, giving CWRU a 4-2 lead.
Hiram scored two runs in the top of the fifth on a pair of solo home runs to even the score at 4-4. Miller then delivered the go-ahead run on a solo home run to left center field. The home run was Miller's team-leading 15th of the season. The Spartans were able to hang on to the lead in the sixth and seventh innings to secure the 5-4 victory.
Senior Sidney Brannam started and pitched all seven innings. She allowed four earned runs on seven hits and two walks, while striking out six batters. She improved to 19-3 on the season with the win.
At the plate, Miller and senior Sydney Wagner each collected two hits, including three runs scored for Miller.
Game 2: Hiram 5, CWRU 2
The Terriers took a lead in the top of second during the late contest, before CWRU was able to even the score at 1-1 in the bottom of the third. Miller got the inning going as she hit a single through the left side of the infield. She then stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error by the Hiram catcher. Cleaveland then delivered a two-out RBI double to right center field that scored Miller.
The score remained 1-1 until the top of the sixth when the Terriers scored four runs in the inning to take a 5-1 lead. The Spartans attempted a comeback and were able to score a run in the bottom of the sixth on a bases loaded walk by sophomore Amanda Riely, however they were unable to push anymore runs across as Hiram held on for the 5-2 victory.
Cleaveland led the squad at the plate with two hits, while Miller, Yashnik, Wagner and Riely each tallied a hit during the second game of the day.
On the mound, first-year Savannah Gazda allowed four earned runs on seven hits and a walk, while striking out one batter in her 5.1 inning pitched. She fell to 1-1 on the year with the loss. Thomas pitched in relief as she didn't allow a run on three hits. Angel Santellan earned the complete-game win for the Terriers, improving to 6-1 on the season.
Case Western Reserve will continue its home stand this weekend, when the team welcomes Wittenberg University to Mather Park for a doubleheader on Sunday, May 2nd. The first game of the doubleheader on Sunday is slated to start at 1:00 p.m. In addition, Sunday will serve as 'Senior Day' for the Spartans.
