The Case Western Reserve University football team faced another opponent for the first time since the 2019 NCAA Playoffs, traveling to Denison University for an exhibition game on Saturday.
The two teams played a half of football, with Denison leading 14-6 at the end of play.
Junior quarterback Drew Saxton and senior wide receiver Colt Morgan fell into a familiar pattern, connecting on a 40-yard pass to open the game. Saxton also converted a fourth and three on the Spartans' opening drive with a pass to sophomore receiver Lucas DeCaro, but a red zone fumble cost the Spartans a chance to score.
Later in the first quarter, an interception by first-year linebacker Andrew Saluan helped setup the Spartans' first score of the game, a 20-yard field goal by first-year kicker Brett Callow with 1:36 left in the opening quarter.
Denison took the lead on a six-yard rushing touchdown with 14:13 left in the first half. Callow added his second field goal of the game with 7:44 to play in the half, cutting the Big Red lead to 7-6, but Denison closed out the half with a 63-yard touchdown pass to go up 14-6.
CWRU football will play its only scheduled regular season game of the season this Thursday, April 8, when the squad travels to Delaware, Ohio to take on Ohio Wesleyan University. The game is slated for a 7:00 p.m. kickoff.
