Softball Extends Winning Streak to Four; Sweep Wooster in Saturday Doubleheader

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

The Case Western Reserve University softball team extended their winning streak to four games and improved to 10-4 on the 2021 campaign after sweeping the College of Wooster 3-2 in the first game and 5-3 in the second game of the doubleheader on Saturday afternoon in Cleveland, Ohio.

With the two losses, the Fighting Scots dropped to 3-3 overall on the season.

Game 1: CWRU 3, Wooster 2
Case Western Reserve senior pitcher Sidney Brannam allowed just two unearned runs and scattered five hits, as the Spartans came from behind to win 3-2 over Wooster in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader.

Brannam struck out five and allowed one walk during her complete-game effort, earning the win to improve to 7-1 on the year

The Fighting Scots struck first in the top of the second to gain a 2-0 lead and held the Spartans scoreless until the bottom of the fourth. CWRU began the bottom of the fourth with a single from senior Dusstyn Reynolds. Junior Liv Thomas followed with a one-out, two-run home run to right center field that tied the game at 2-2. The home run was her first of the season. Senior Sydney Wagner then stepped up later in the inning and hit a double to center field. She then stole third and eventually came around to score on a passed ball by the Fighting Scots catcher.

Wooster had chances to score in the following innings, but Brannam and the Spartan defense held them off the board to secure the victory.

Game 2: CWRU 5, Wooster 3
The Fighting Scots once again opened the scoring in the late contest, scoring one run in the top of the second inning.

CWRU responded in the bottom of the third as first-year KaiLi Gross hit a single through the left side of the infield that scored first-year Kela Jagoda.

Wooster reclaimed the lead in the top of the fourth with a two run homer from Gabby Lakes. The Spartans answered back in the next half inning with a run of their own. Senior Sarah Miller laced a triple down the right field line, and then senior Arisa Cleaveland scored Miller with a RBI single to center field.

CWRU entered the bottom of the sixth facing a 3-2 deficit before the comeback began. Thomas was able to get all the way to third and then scored on a wild pitch, evening the game at 3-3. Jagoda then delivered the go-ahead RBI triple to center field that scored Wagner and senior Hope Yashnik. The Spartans held Wooster scoreless in the top of the seventh to secure the doubleheader sweep.

The triple was Jagoda's first of her career. Cleaveland, Gross and Jagoda each went two-for-three at the plate during the second game.

Gross got the start on the mound and went the distance, allowing two earned runs on eights and two walks, while striking out three batters. She earned her first collegiate win on the mound, improving to 1-1 on the season.

Case Western Reserve will look to continue their win streak against the Fighting Scots tomorrow, as the two teams will face off in another doubleheader at Galpin Park in Wooster, Ohio on Sunday. First pitch of the first game is slated for 1:00 p.m.
