Box Score 2 The Case Western Reserve University softball team picked up a pair of wins on Saturday afternoon in Cleveland, Ohio, defeating Kenyon College 11-0 in five innings in the first game of the day, and then defeated the Ladies 16-2 in five innings in the late contest.
The Spartans improved to 5-3 on the season with the two wins, while Kenyon dropped to 0-2 overall.
Senior Sarah Miller and first-year KaiLi Gross led the Spartans at the plate during the two games. Miller went three-for-six with two home runs and seven runs batted in while Gross added a six-for seven performance with one home run and four RBI's.
Game 1: CWRU 11, Kenton 0 (5 innings)
Gross, senior Hope Yashnik and junior Grace Yeung led the Spartans at the plate in the first game, as each went two-for-three with two runs batted in.
CWRU got on the board early as they struck for six runs in the bottom of the first. Included in the inning was a RBI single from senior Sydney Wagner and a two-run RBI double from senior Arisa Cleaveland.
The Spartans added to their lead in the bottom of the third, as Yashnik, Yeung and first-year Kela Jagoda each hit RBI singles that increased the Spartan advantage to 9-0. CWRU pushed two more runs across in the bottom of the fourth as Cleaveland scored on a wild pitch and Yeung delivered her second RBI of the game on a double to right center field that scored first-year Kaila Nutter.
Senior Sidney Brannam started and pitched an outstanding four innings as she struck out six batters and only allowed one hit. She improved to 3-1 after the game one victory. First-year Jenna Jaklich pitched the final inning in relief, allowing zero runs on one hit and one walk while striking out two batters.
Game 2: CWRU 16, Kenyon (5 innings)
Kenyon took the early lead in the second game, going up 1-0 in the top of the first. CWRU responded quickly in the bottom half of the inning as they scored four runs to take a 4-1 lead after an inning of play. Cleaveland and Gross each hit RBI doubles in the inning, while Yashnik added a RBI single.
The Spartans added another run in the bottom of the second to take the 5-1 lead after an RBI groundout from Wagner scored Miller from third.
Kenyon cut the lead to 5-2 with a run in the top of the third, but CWRU once again responded with a six-run bottom of the third to push the score to 11-2. Gross led off the inning with a towering solo home run down the right field line, it was her third of the season. Jagoda added a RBI double later in the inning and then Miller stepped up to the plate and launched a three-run homer to left field. The home run was her second of the season. Senior Dusstyn Reynolds wrapped up the scoring in the inning as she hit a RBI single through the left side of the infield that scored Wagner from third.
The Spartans then erupted for another five runs in the bottom of the fourth to increase the lead to 16-2. Miller highlighted the inning as she cleared the bases with a grand slam to right field. The home run was her second of the game and third on the season.
Gross went a perfect four-for-four at the plate with a home run and two RBI's during the second game, while Miller went three-for-four with seven runs batted in and two home runs.
Brannam started the second game of the game and went three innings, allowing two runs on five hits and striking out two batters. She collected the win and improved to 4-1 on the season. Gross finished the game on the mound, as she struck out four batters and did not allow a hit in her two innings of relief.
Case Western Reserve will be back in action tomorrow, as they hit the road for a doubleheader against Defiance College. The first game of the doubleheader is scheduled to start at 1:00 p.m.
