The 2021 season served as a year of growth as the Case Western Reserve University volleyball team finished the year with a 13-14 overall record, while posting a 2-5 mark in the University Athletic Association and finishing in sixth place at the UAA Championships.
CWRU opened the season with a 4-4 record, including two wins by a score of 3-0. Of their 27 matches in 2021, the Spartans won nine of those by a score of 3-0.
The Spartans were paced by sophomore middle blocker Jennifer Ngo, who earned All-UAA First Team recognition and was selected as the conference's sophomore of the year, as well as All-UAA Second Team honoree sophomore libero Alyssa Blessinger and All-UAA Honorable Mention junior outside hitter Gianna Lambert.
Ngo became the fourth Spartan over the past seven years to be named to the All-UAA First Team, joining former Spartans Haley Kauffman (2015), Brianna Lemon (2017) and Karley King (2018). Ngo finished the regular season with a .226 hitting percentage and led the team with 247 kills (2.52 per set). In addition, she ranked first on the team with 110 total blocks (1.12 per set), including 33 solo. Her 1.12 blocks per set ranked second among all University Athletic Association players this year. Ngo's 1.12 blocks per set also puts her third-best in school history for blocks per set in a single-season.
Blessinger averaged a conference-best 5.20 digs per set during the 2021 season, while also leading the UAA with 504 total digs. Her 5.20 digs per set puts her at third in school history for digs per set in a single season. The starting libero in every game during the season, Blessinger led the Spartans and all UAA players with 0.49 service aces per set, which ranks second in the program's single-season history.
Lambert led the squad with 2.70 kills per set as she totaled 216 kills during the season. She also gathered 73 digs, 34 total blocks and 13 service aces throughout the season. Over her career, Lambert has totaled 332 kills (1.95 per set), 112 digs and 85 total blocks.
In addition, junior setter Sara Rogers and first-year outside hitter Rea Marfatia played key roles in the Spartans rotation.
Rogers directed the attack and tallied 703 assists (7.10 per set). She also finished second on the team with 319 digs (3.22 per set) and added 66 kills, 40 total blocks and 15 service aces. Over her career, she has collected 1,041 assists (5.95 per set) and 460 digs (2.63 per set).
Marfatia finished second on the team with 221 kills (2.46 per set) and recorded a .156 hitting percentage. She also tallied 210 digs (2.33 per set), 24 service aces and 14 total blocks.
At the net, junior outside hitter Meara Reeder averaged 1.27 kills per set, while first-year right side hitter Chloe Maciejewski and senior middle blocker Maggie Sereika averaged 1.14 and 1.03 kills per set, respectively. Sereika finished fourth on the team with 90 kills and Maciejewski finished fifth with 87 kills.
